I currently own a S&W 442 and am thinking of upgrading to a 640. I like the idea of an all steel gun that can shoot .357 in a Centennial frame.

Does anyone know if I will need to buy a new ankle and pocket holster because the barrel on the 640 is .25" longer than the 442? Currently my EDC is the 442 in a Desantis Nemisis.

I can't answer your question if it will fit in your current holster.
I can tell you from experience that the 640 will feel much heavier then your 442, especially when carried in your pocket. The difference in weight is only 8ozs, but it feels like much more. The 640 is also just bigger enough, that pocket carry concealment will be tougher unless you wear pants with somewhat deep pockets.
Think twice about trading your 442 for a 640. You'll miss it!

There's always the other side too. The extra 8 oz of the 640 will reduce felt recoil substantially. It will be about half of what you feel in the 442 with the same load. If you carry standard or +P loads in your 442 you'll find you probably can shoot just as well with +P+ or 357 in the 640. I carried one that was issued and carried +P+ ammo as I felt recovery time between shots was too much with magnums.

I believe your holsters will work as I carried the 640 in a DeSantis Speed scabbard belt holster and IWB made for the Model 60.

I don't think .25" makes that much diffrence in a pocket carry which I never have been a fan of as I think it takes a lot longer to draw vs a belt or IWB holster. I don't think the weight will bother you in the ankle holster at all.

I've been able to use the same holsters for either gun model (442 vs 640).

I have a Fist IWB, a Kramer pocket holster, and a DeSantis Nemesis. Sll fit my 442 and 640 equally well.

Fake Name - Downgrading to a 640 from a 442? Say it ain't so! You mean you will get a 640 in addition to your 442, right?

The 442 is staying!

I wouldn't part with her! I'm thinking of the 640 as an EDC and the 442 for when in slacks or shorts. What may go is the Glock 27 though.
