Hi, have a question. I really enjoy my 642 but it is hard on my hand at the range so i'm thinking of trading for a 640. I have several holsters and a couple of grips for the 642 will the 640 fit the same holsters and will my grips fit on the 640? I looked at the web site and i see the 640 is just a bit longer then the 642 something like 1/4 inch. are the grips the same? thank you

The grips will defenatly fit the 640 and there's a possibility that your holsters may work as well. I've a 640 with some S&W grips that are no longer available TTBOMK, that I sometimes carry in an old Biyanqi No. 5 holster.

thank you csmkersh, so the grips on the 36 in your picture would fit on the 640 then. I use that type of grip on my 642 with a tyler t adapter.

    johnnylaw53,
All the J frame grips I have fit on my M640. I put a lot of them on the M640 one day and took some pictures.
You will see even the old Service Grips fit even though they look a little funny.
From what I've experienced all round butt J frame grips fit on all round butt J frames.

Badger Rosewood Grips: (These are the grips I keep on this revolver)

These S&W Banana Grips fit too but I didn't take a photo of them on the M640. Here they are on my M638:

These Eagle Secret Service Grips also fit on the M640. (again I didn't get a picture of them on the 640)

archangle thank you I don't think the service grips look funny at all they are the same type i have on my 642 now use to be on an old mod 60 i owned and at that time I replaced them with rubber grips as i was having a hard time keeping my score in the 90's, at that time we shot out to 25 yrds. The rubber was on it when i traded it for a ppk/s back then so i put the woods on the 642 when i got it 18 months ago. One last question if you don't mind. Do you think the extra weight of the 640 will reduce my felt recoil enought to off set the additonal 8 ounces and the $200.00 or so dollars that i will have to give along with the 642 to get one? thanks

    be safe
