My brother puchased a S&W 686 in .38 only. It has an extra chamber in the cylinder and is rated for +P ammo. My immediate response was, "are you sure about that". I had never heard of this gun until he told me about it. He said it is a rare breed. He's an experienced shooter and I guess I shouldn't doubt him but I've never heard of it before. Anyone else?

There was a South American police contract 686 marked as you describe. He's probably got one of the overruns (it does happen).

I haven't seeen the 686 .38 Special but had both 681 and 581 .38 Specials for sale in my shop.
These are fixed sight versions of the 686/586.
If I remember correctly, they were contract overruns from an Australian Police order.

I saw a new one for sale at a local shop about 2 months ago - maybe they have made some more.

Maybe these are the Australian guns mentioned on another thread

Another thread mentioned that Australia has traded in their police revolvers and they are on their way to the USA. Maybe these .38 Special are some of them.

    I would go for a 581 in .38 Special.

Not the one I saw - it was a brand new 686 4" (I thought it was a 6 shot, not a plus, but I might be mistaken). As far as I know its still in the case (I haven't been by this shop since):
