6mm remington

If the rifle in question is a Remington 788 I would grab it in an instant. The 788 had interrupted bolt lugs at the back of the bolt instead of at the bolt face. The haters claimed it made the action weaker and less accurate but I have three of them and haven't noticed. They are chambered in 6mm, 30-30, and .308.

Hard to find a nice 788 in 6mm. Time for a reboot. Remington, you listening?

I have been thinking about having a 6.5 Creed Tikka rebarreled to 6mm Rem. It would have the right mag and bolt stop.

Magnumitis and shoulder shooting (or meat ruining, as I call it) go hand in hand.

Stick a 6 Rem behind the shoulder (or 243, 6 creed, etc), through heart and lungs, and it will kill faster with less meat loss than shoulder shooting with a 300wm.

I've been shooting and loading for the 6mm Rem since 1975 when I purchased my first deer rifle - Rem 700ADL. Over the years we shot whitetails, jackrabbits, eastern woodchucks, western rockchucks and LOTS of paper. It probably hadn't seen more than 100 rounds of factory ammo over 45 years. Eventually, accuracy deteriorated - I just plain wore it out. I had to make a decision - rebarrel or send it down the road. I ended up taking it to Hart Barrels and had it rebarreled. Hart did a beautiful job and bedded the action in the original ADL stock. 24", satin finished, fluted, stainless.

It now shoots 1/2" or better, 5-shot groups with IMR 4350 and Barnes 80g TTSX at 3,400 fps and will accompany me Saturday on opening day of deer season.

I've owned several .243 Winchesters. All were accurate, and I hunted with all of them. While the handloaded 6mm Rem will add 100fps to an equivalent .243 Win, you simply cannot tell the difference between them in the field. Even so, my .243s are all gone and the refreshed 6mm Rem 700 will always be with me.

The 6mm Remington is nothing but a 7mm Mauser necked to 6mm ... It really needs an intermediate action to work really really well but does well in a short action ..

Exactly, the 6mm Rem is a 7x57 necked down to 6mm, which is an "intermediate" length cartridge. That said, rifle manufacturers chambered the 6mm in short actions over the years. The same can be said for the 257 Roberts. The only disadvantage to the short action versions is you can't seat the longer bullets out as far as you'd sometimes like.

I've got an old Remington M700 6mm Rem that I don't shoot very much but it's a fine rifle. I've also got a couple of 243s. They're all great in their own ways.

6mm Rem in Rem 700 BDL is what I graduated to after starting hunting with a 30-30. It caries a slight ballistic advantage over the 243 (you wouldn't notice or the critter you hit), but as mentioned before, finding ammo could be problematic if you don't reload. Sometime posted you may be able to for 243 in it,,, I don't think so, I doubt it will chamber. If I'm not mistaken the 243 case is slightly fatter and shorter than the 6mm.

In about 1975 my dad bought me my first big game rifle; a used Ruger 77 flat bolt chambered in 6mm Remington. He mounted a Redfield 4X scope on it and it's still there and plenty of scope for such a rifle and cartridge. I shot many, many deer with it as a kid and it's been my go-to rifle for loaning and use by new shooters for almost four decades. I have always used a handload a 100 gr. Hornady SP over 43.0 grs. of IMR-4350 for 3000+ fps. I could never begin to count the head of game taken by this rifle and load here in Texas. My wife and both daughters have used it to good effect. The one-antlered buck was taken by my youngest at a hair over 200 yds.

Soooo. How much was he asking for the 6mm Remington. :D I think its quite an interesting cartridge. In fact my local store has some. Made by Winchester even!View attachment 1113907
Wow! Hard to believe the price of Factory 6mm Remington ammo, as shown in the picture. I'm a handloader and my loads are more accurate than factory; rarely buy factory ammo, but do buy new cases sometimes.

I will always enjoy memories of the late 60s M-700 6mm Rem ADL I purchased new while working at a sport shop for the princely sum of $114. It was the first big game gun in my family for as far back as anyone could recall. I had read all of Jack O'Connor I could get my hands on, but wanted something that was more suitable for coyote, fox and varmints as well as deer. It never let me down, but of course was sold in pursuit of newer/better.

The cartridge was a victim of Remington marketing, so when I recently looked for an accurate 6mm I ended up with a 6mm Creedmoor. It is currently easier to find and purchase, but 6mm Rem did the job just fine.

I think my B.I.L. had the first Rem 700 in 6mm that I ever saw. As I remember, it had a pretty short barrel. He loved it, but seems like it barked loudly. I bought 700, .243 with a 24" barrel and it's been a fine rifle for varmints like Eastern coyotes and woodchucks at some pretty long ranges. It's also served my daughter's father-in-law quite well for eastern whitetails also. He's pretty short, but it fits him, and he shoots it well.

A Ruger M77 6mm paid for our Christmas a few times when I was a kid, but it was the M77V with a Weaver K6W. BTW I really like your setup. That scope is percect on there

At the risk of wearing out my welcome to this thread, here are pics of another 6mm Rem rifle. Unlike the two custom 6mm's described in previous posts, this one is an unadorned 40-X as delivered from Remington's Custom Shop some 30+ years ago. I have long favored the 40-X, being convinced by experience that they were the surest and quickest way to get a surperbly accurate rifle without going through aggrivating discussions, confusions and delays typically associated with having custom rifles built. All I wanted was a solid and accurate rifle for long range varmint shooting and also for occasionally testing the multitude of 6mm bullets continually appearing on the reloading market. This rifle nicely filled the bill at that time, especially when later fitted with Leupold's VARI-X III 8.5-25x50mm Long Range scope IMG-2832-2.jpg IMG-2826-2.jpg IMG-2837-2.jpg .
