I have been daydreaming about building one of these - in a bolt action. I want it to be light weight to use for MN deer and coyotes. I want the bbl to be a max of 22" - 20" preferred. I will be using either the 65 or 75 gr V-max for coyotes and the Speer 85 gr SPBT for deer.
My questions:
1. What donor 223 rifle/action should I use?
2. Should I re-barrel or re-bore?
3. Which gunsmith do you recommend?
4. If re-barreling, which make?
5. What twist?
Thanks in advance.

PS - price is important. No four figure $ actions

i have a 6x47 built on a 700 adl. its got a 24" tube but otherwise is pretty much what you are looking for. ershaw did the barrel and lapped my action. the work was done well and fairly cheep i can recomend them.

given a choice i think id use the savage 25 or a mini mauser action next time.

You can just buy a whole new gun in .243 Winchester for what you are likely to spend putting together a 6x45 you can be proud of.

Check Buds.
Buncha bolt gun .243's for $300

I'm just sayin....
I have seriously considered buying the .243. I have one in a TC Encore handgun 15" bbl.
I just want a light weight, small, quick handling, low recoil rifle. Perhaps in some selfish way I want to have a custom rifle. Plus my nieces and nephews could use this little rifle.

as the 243 is an awsome round, and one I want, I like the 6x45. Ive always wanted to build. you get good bullet choice, good velocity, and cheap loading components. as to a donor rifle, id pick up a used savage short action. you can buy the aftermarket barrel, barrel wrench, headspace gauges and do the swap yourself. its really easy....... I think I kniw what my next builds gonna be..... after all my other projects I have yet to finish...

A 30-30 with a soft butt pad, and mild-loaded 125-grain bullets would be cheaper, and could be easily sized to fit smaller folks. Kids who can't handle a full-size rifle probably aren't taking any long shots anyway.

The 6x45 is a decent round.
I spent a lot on building one on an AR15. The novelty wore off pretty quickly.

I would just go .243 and be done, without spending a bunch of cheddar for a custom to do the same thing. I do not know what area of MN you are in but I would recommend Skip at Lone Oak Gunsmithing in Brainerd for any gun work. If you are set on a build the easiest way would be to get a Savage 10 or 12 action and rebarrel which you could do on your dining room table. No gunsmith required for Savage builds.

Thanks for the advise. I live in Burnsville. I am not sure the Mrs will allow dining room table upgrade, but I have a spot I can use ;-)
