When is ANYONE going to get new 7.5 swiss brass in?

I know you can use 284 win brass, but I would rather not use those unless there is no other choice. I'm not in a great big hurry. I would like to use this rifle as a backup deer gun (next year).

So, who has the skinny on the brass???

Thanks,

Stinger

Why the reluctance to use .284 Win? The stuff works fine. It beats waiting for someone to manufacture new brass.

A number of people have received word from Wolf that 7.5 would be introduced this year with reloadable brass cases. I just checked their website but no mention of 7.5.

When I need 7.5 brass, I just drive over to Cabelas and get a bag of .284. No waiting. Works just fine and I couldn't care less if it doesn't have the proper headstamp.......

If I go the .284 winchester route, which brand would you recommend. Lapua, Norma, Winchester, or something else?

I am leaning towards Winchester because it is much cheaper. But if you feel like the others would better suit my needs, please feel free to tell me why.

Regards,

Stinger

I use winchester .284 without any problems.

Go the .284 brass route. Resizing .284 to 7.5 swiss is no big deal, in fact if I put a piece of .284 brass on your shell holder and a fired piece of 7.5 swiss brass on your shell holder while you were blindfolded, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. ;)

First time you resize the .284, it might be a good idea to use a little extra lube inside the neck. That's the only part of the case that changes much, stretching to .308. I resized 100 cases, got one split neck.

Use Imperial Sizing Wax. A tin goes a long way. I use Win brass. It's locally available and lasts for a good long time.

Spray-on lube worked pretty well for me. I split 3 necks out of 100 .284 Win cases. My K-31 has never had any brass but reformed .284 Win in it. I have only used Winchester brass. Works fine for me. One batch of cases has 4 firings, now. No sign of wear.

I've got one lot of fifty Win 284 cases that's been loaded six times with no splits and no signs of trouble. First time sizing it, and every 3rd time after, I anneal the case necks. I use Hornady Unique case lube, and lube the inside of the neck using either a case neck brush or a patch on a short cleaning rod.

Thanks guys. I just ordered a hundred pieces of Winchester brass from Cabelas. I don't have any rifle that I can mistake .284 for anyhow, so the headstamp shouldn't matter too much.

Mistake? Easy to do. I put a couple of .308 rounds in my K31 by mistake. They shot good, the brass held together, and it was as accurate as the "real" stuff. But when I looked at the spent brass, it was shaped real funny.

I'm trying to be more careful now. :)

I would really like to learn how to do this but I am totally new to reloading. Is there a special tool you need to resize the .284 Win brass? I was going to buy a set of 2 dies for 7.5 Swiss from MidwayUSA with other supplies (including a hand press), should I get that or a different die? Or is there more I need?

I've never used a hand press (lee type I think you a talking about) but I would think that it would not be conducive to case forming. The .284 to 7.5 is not a difficult job, but you'll be better off with a table mount style press. If you are trying to save cost, I believe Lee makes a really inexpensive "O" or "D" style press that will suit you well.

From the sites I've looked at it seem the .284 Win brass is almost as expensive as GP11 itself. I know you can use it a few times but that seems high.

No. I have the standard 7.5x55Swiss RCBS die set. The sizing die takes care of the resizing. There's not much resizing, mostly stretching the bullet opening from .284 to .308.

Besides, making the opening go from about .284"(7mm) to .30", you'll also be pushing the shoulder back at least .010" or more likely .020". Resetting the shoulder or failure to do so is probably the most common problem encountered when reforming the 284 brass to 7.5XSwiss. You will be reforming not resizing brass. A common problem does occur frequently when setting the OAL for a K-31. If one uses OAL info from load manuals that have no specific K-31 data, then their data reflects a longer throat for older Swiss actions. Do not try to set OAL's at 3 plus inches in the K-31's. It generally won't work. With exceptions, most likely K-31 OAL's will be in the 2.8 to 2.9" range. If by hand press, you mean hand held press as opposed to a mounted bench type press of some kind, you may have difficulty refoming the brass. Best-o-Luck

Huntington's out of Oroville, CA list them in the last catalog they sent me. Showed them @ $77.00 per hundred. I don't have a Swiss so haven't checked to see if in stock. Brand is Norma.

You should check out Graf's Reloading in either Mexico or St Charles, Missouri. The 7.5 Swiss has the Graf headstamp. Price is right at $28 a hundred - which is about the price of standard US brass. I've been very satisfied with the brass. Probably from Eastern Europe, but the price is right.
