I'm thinking of building a 7.62x39 AR but i need to know if they'll shoot laqured steel cases or brass washed steel cases or if I'll need to shoot brass cased ammo.

I have shot plenty of steel case .223 ammo in my AR. It is dirty and you need to make sure you clean the chamber well. I don't see why it wouldn't shoot it.
Maybe someone who has one can chime in.

I've had mixed luck; my 20" build (Shaw barrel) would not, and one of my two 16" builds (Shaw barrels) would and the other would not.

It's a gas pressure and chamber size deal. The 20" gas system simply doesn't give enough pressure to the bolt, and Shaw chambers are cut rather tight in general.

An in spec AR will function with a straightwall case like 223, so the tapered x39 should be no problem.

True, unless the chamber is cut on the tight side of the SAAMI spec. Steel cased ammo seems to requires a chamber cut a bit looser, presumably to help compensate for the difference in elasticity between steel and brass.

Perhaps DPMS cuts their chambers a bit looser than Shaw does.

I built my 7.62x39 AR with a Colt Sporter barrel. It shoots mostly Wolf, some Barnual and some Silver Bear. It's never seen a brass case since I built it and has never hiccuped. I suppose I've put maybe 600-700 rounds through it.

The biggest problem for x39 ARs is mags. That is the only reason why I still don't trust this rifle 100% like my AK. I was very lucky to get two 20 round and two 30 round USA brand Franken mags. The 20s been 100% for me. I only used the thirties a couple times and only once at full capacity, but I don't remember if they ever misfed either.

I'm crossing my fingers and sending good thoughts towards C-Products who's working on new production 7.62x39 25 round mags. Their first try at it didn't work out so well, but instead of making excuses, they immediately went back to the drawing board and redesigned practically the entire mag. They have a great reputation and seem pretty diligent about these so I'm expecting good things from them and hope many support them so they recoup their considerable investment.
