7.62x39 non AK rifle?

What are my options with this round? It has a great reputaion as a stopper, its dirt cheap and readily available, but I don't like AK-based weapons.



I'm looking for a semiauto carbine to possibly take the place of my AR.

Any ideas?

The Daewoo DR-300 is in 7.62x39. There's also a shop around converting Enfields to fire 7.62x39 from the single-stack AK mags. Not to mention SKSs.

Not many semi-auto choices.

Basically boils down to---AK's---SKS's----Mini-30's---and if you can find and old Colt AR in 7.62x39----but good luck finding decent hi-cap magazines for any of them other than the AK.

Not to mention the legalities in changing an SKS or Mini-30 etc......

Yeah, I saw something about a mini 30, but apparently mags are pretty rare...

SKS. It's as accurate as most, more reliable than most, and very affordable.
A trick for about halfing the group size is to take a spent 12 bore shot shell, cut the brass base away, then cut the plastic tube in half length-wise. Take half and put under the gas tube before reassembly. I've found this roughly half's group size.
If you prefer a peep sight, Mojo and Williams make an aperature back sight.
Be sure to round the corners of the mag release. They are about razor sharp and will hurt your hand.
I also lost the folding bayonet and filed off the mount.
Don't add an aftermarket hi-cap mag. They don't work. Anyway, 10 rounds is plenty and makes for a handy package.

Forgot to add, if you aren't tied to a self-loading rifle, look at the little CZ bolt action carbine. Very, very nice.

It's really easy to get an upper for an AR in 7.62x39, and a couple of companies make complete rifles that way.

The Daewoo's are good weapons. Well thought out design.

However, they were designed in 5.56 (with M-16 mags) so I'm not sure how the 7.62-39 would run. I think it was a mod to try to sell to the American market.

However, they are no longer imported so I think parts and assecories will be hard to come by since there weren't many to begin with.

I would really go with an AK. You an buy excellent versions now. I have played with almost everything out there and the AK is a solid weapon. Plus there is a lot of custom work going on with them now, mags are dirt cheap as is ammo. Hard combo to beat.

I really would encourage you to re-look the AK option.

Rugers are hard to get good mags for, Daewoos are scarce, SKS's are not in the same league, and I would rather have the AR-15 in 5.56.

here's another vote for the CZ bolt action. I saw one this past weekend and immediately fell in love. I can't see how you could go wrong with one of these...

DPMS makes 7.62x39 uppers, and I'm sure that any of the "semi-custom" shops that offer pistol calibers and wildcat calibers could also make you exactly what you're looking for in 7.62x39.

FWIW, Although quality mags for this caliber are hard, if not impossible to find (especially the Mini-30), I have been told more than once that the standard AR mags will feed the 7.62x39 round in the AR, it just holds less.

As bad as the accuracy of the Mini-30 is (mine sure was anyway), I'd go for the AR upper.

Another vote for the SKS

Mine will do 3 inches easy at 100yrds, and no one hunts prairie dogs with the 7.62X39 anyway. (Do They?) With all of the aftermarket stuff out there you can customize it until you have pretty much exactly what you want.

Unless you'd settle for a bolt action. Those CZ's are sure cute, might have to get me one of those.

Robarm makes their recon carbine in 7.62x39mm. It takes standard AK magazines, too. Dunno if they sell that one to Jane and Joe Citizen yet, though...last time I checked their web site, that rifle was "military sales only".

Seriously, they are cheap, common, simple, reliable, accurate(if your standards aren't too high) and just fun as anything. What's not to like?

Sold my Mini-30 after too much invested...

It sure looked cool all tricked out, but the accuracy was poor, and it wasn't really built for sustained rapid fire...IMNSHO, YMMV

I'm looking at a friend's tricked out SKS...it looks like a mini-Druganov now, and it's built up on a Russian milled receiver model...

Seriously I'd reconsider the AK maybe look into some of the nice custom work out there for them.

I have a buddy put about $200 into customizing an SAR 1 plus put a red dot type scope on it. Afterwords you could hardly tell it was still an AK except the give away bananna clips.

Hi cap mags for the SKS aren't all that cheap and tend not to work. I have 5 of them, from 20 to 40 rds, and only one of the 20's is reliable.

Why not an AK? The high end US-made AKs you can get now are NICE. A VEPR, or anything for AK-USA or Arsenal would get the job done and then some... Only around $500-$600ish usually for those models.

I had a bad experience with USA brand magazines for the Mini-30. Of the four that I bought, only two worked right. I was able to tweak one but the remaining mag was pure junk.
