I used to have a 742 30-06 that suffered the problem of peening its interior rails. We had it smoothed once, but then sold it to move on to a weapon without that issue.

My uncle is now getting rid of a 7400 270. It has barely been shot.

I thought I read somewhere that at some point, Remington redesigned the interior of these guns to stop the problems with the bolt beating up the interior rails... or at least they built it so the bolt beat up a sacrificial, removable part instead of the receiver.

Anyone know if I'm remembering this correctly, and what vintage or model the change was made in? It's been so long, that when I look inside this thing, I'm not certain if it has been changed from what mine used to be.

I have a 60's 742 Carbine in .308 Win. killed 50-60 deer with it over the years. Shot it quite a bit at the range testing loads and sighting in scopes. You can just barley see where the bolt lugs touched the rail but no damage. Discussing this model with other owners, seems this damage only happened in .270, .280, 30-06 length rounds, not the shorter .243, .308 length rounds. Remington modified the 7400 receivers to eliminate the problem hdbiker
