to the original post, take your rifle to a gun shop and see if they will give-sale you a few screws from a remington 700,s plug screws from the reciever, i know my lgs has a box full of reciever plug screws left over from mounting scope,s, they are the same size. i own several 788,s and their little brothers the 580,s series .22 rifles . they used to be inexpensive, but they are not today as i sold several out of my collection. a 788 in .44 mag in ex condition went for 800.00 and a 788 in 30-30 went for 700.00 in very good used condition, even plain 788,s in regular calibers go for 400.00-500.00+. at one time i has about 20 original extra magizines in the factory packages for them and a dealer bought them all for a very good price for me. in the late 60,s they could be bought new for 90.00-100.00 as i bought several, at the same time a remington 1100 shotgun sold for 150.00-160.00. eastbank.
