Why would someone drop several grand on having a custom rifle built around a Savage 99 action? I don't know but I'm glad they did! The gentleman that did this recently passed away and I bought this rifle from his family. Being a lefty, I've always been partial to lever actions. This one started life in the late 60's I believe. It is now in .7mm-08 with a beautiful high grade walnut stock with very fine hand checkering. It also has a 25" tapered octagon barrel. It is topped with a Leupold M8 4X scope (I have the same scope on my custom 7mm Mauser) in Bueler mounts. The UPS guy just brought me some dies and brass. I have on hand good selection of bullets for my 7mm Mauser.
I was wondering if anyone had any good load sugestions for this rifle. I really don't know how strong the 99 action is.

    Thanks for your input.

    You LUCKY Dog

I don't have any load data but I'd love to have that rifle. Savage 99s have always held my interest. Good luck with it.

Congrats on a great caliber. I'm a little baffled by the logic behind what the previous did as well, but anyway, here's what I can tell you.....

I've had a 7mm-08 in Remington 700 LVSF for about two years now. Due to my reloading, I've only shot 1 type of factory loads in mine. I used Federal Fusion 140 grain bullets for the initial barrel break in and sighting in.
Fusions gave me right at 1" groups at 100 yards at about 2850fps. Very respectible for factory ammo.

You may want to start less than this for loads
For reloads I've been able to get 4 other loads less than 1" @100yds.
Speer 130gr Hot core 46gr Varget for velocity of 3050fps
Hornady Interbond 139gr 45gr Varget for velocity of 3030fps
Barnes TSX 120gr 46gr Varget for velocity of 3070fps
Remington Corelokt 140gr 45gr Varget for velocity of 3005fps

Primers were CCI 200. OAL is max for my Remington. Not sure what your rifles' magazine will allow, but I usually start at the maximum length that the rifle allows. I would start a couple of grains below mine to make sure everything is holding up and no signs of pressure.

in the 7-08 i have had really good luck w/ rl-15, varget, and h-380 w/ 120 grain sierras. my favorite powder of those 3 is probably h-380 - but all 3 have been remarkable in my 7-08's.
