i have a 7mm 08 model 700. ive hunted with it for years and have rarely taken shots at over 150 yards. if i did though what would be the maximum range i could cleanly kill a whitetail, and also what bullet weight and type would hold up best on a long range shot?

I use 160gr (handloads) and have taken them as far as 400yds but I'm sure it'll go further than that. Pretty flat shooting accurate caliber.

ok thanks what about factory loads and do you know anything about a formula or way to calculate wind into long range shooting or how much the wind may affect a cirtain shot.

mod700 what brand of ammo are you using first off? Go to that companies web site and look at their ballistics tables, you can get your info from there. Keep in mind however that all of the charts are calculated for 10MPH cross winds, hope this helps.

I shoot the Hornady light magnum 139gr SST out of my 7mm-08. It shoots very flat and seems to hold velocity well. I would not hesitate to take a shot at 300 yards and would only worry about my shooting (not the bullet) out past that.

The hornady light mag 139gr load is still at 2100fps/1360ft-lbs at 500 yards (according to their ballistics).

It`s generally agreed it takes 1000 fp of energy to cleanly take a deer. The max range if this is true, for any cartridge and bullet wgt then, would be the range the energy drops below this point.
