7mm Mag Fox/Coyote Hide Damage control

Ok here is the deal, hunting buddy Taxidermist owns a 7mag and wants to know if I can reload a super flat shooting load that will NOT tear em in half.

Never thought about loading the Big 7 for saving hides LOL well I suspect a FMJ or less expanding bullet would be needed.

any thoughts?

Try one of the Sierra MKHP or Bergers bullets. Sounds funny, but they don't come apart and you might have good luck with them.
 
At one time Barnes made a bullet just for this purpose. No expansion, just about the same hole on the exit side. I'm not sure of the name of it but I know they had (maybe still do) it. It was made in 7mm
 
Problem is, typical solids drill right thru. Wiley may run 1/2 mile before he goes down. Maybe these are different.

Head shots might be the program. Dunno.

I used to use my uncle's .270 for groundhogs. With typical deer bullets, a groundhog was DRT. Nominal but adequate expansion. A controlled expansion bullet might be the program.

I think the term "use enough gun" applies here
 
why not a reduced load using a cast bullet? may not be a 200 yd rifle but it should work. OR call Accurate Arms they have a powder XMP 5744 designed for reduced loads. Perhaps this and
the proper jacketed bullet will be the one
 
My 7mag and a couple others I have loaded for won't shoot well with 125's or lighter bullets. They won't even hit a coyote at 250 yards with the light bullets.

I would be inclined to try a 140 grain bullet or so, something with controlled expansion like a Barnes X might be just the ticket if your gun will shoot them. Another one that I like is the Sierra GameKing 160 hollow point, the hollow point is a tougher construction than the soft point GameKing, and it should expand less in a small animal like a coyote. They are actually designed for the higher impact velocities of magnum cartridges when shooting big game, but should work well for coyotes too. Accuracy has been as good as the MatchKing bullets in the guns I have shot them in as far as I can tell.

I think to that a big game bullet with heavy constuction designed for elk etc. may be the ticket. The barnes may also work well. My concerns would be that a fmj or solid may just make a real nice hole and mad 'yote sure he'd die but where???????? I don't think a heavily constructed HP or soft point would have enough mass or time in mass to open to the destructive point vs. conventional varmint bullets.

Personally I would use not having a say 22-250, .243 etc. as a reason to buy one :D

good practice for Big game though !!!!
