It worked the way we say it should. Moral: Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

8 Grocery Employees Stabbed in Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tenn.
A knife-wielding grocery store employee attacked eight co-workers Friday, seriously injuring five before a witness pulled a gun and stopped him, police said.

The 21-year-old suspect, whose name was withheld pending charges, was arrested and then taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pains, Memphis Police Sgt. Vince Higgins said. The attack apparently stemmed from a work dispute, police said.

Five victims, one in critical condition, were admitted to the Regional Medical Center, the main trauma hospital for the Memphis area. Three others were less badly hurt and treated at another hospital.

The attacker, chasing one victim into the store's parking lot, was subdued by Chris Cope, manager of a financial services office in the same small shopping center, Higgins said.

Cope said he grabbed a 9mm semiautomatic pistol from his pickup truck when he saw the attacker chasing the victim "like something in a serial killer movie."

"When he turned around and saw my pistol, he threw the knife away, put his hands up and got on the ground," Cope told The Associated Press. "He saw my gun and that was pretty much it."

Police arrived within minutes and took the attacker into custody.

"He just kept saying, 'I'm insane. I wish I was never born' and that kind of stuff," Cope said.

The attack started in an employee area of the Schnucks supermarket on the outskirts of Memphis and no customers were involved, Higgins said.

Police said two large kitchen knives used in the attack were found at the scene.

Witness Frank Rector said the attacker held a knife high in a stabbing position as he chased a victim into the parking lot. The victim, Rector said, "was circling, trying to get away from him."

The ages of the victims were not immediately released. Higgins and a company spokeswoman said all the victims were employees of the store.

The spokeswoman said officials from the St. Louis-based company were on their way to the scene.

Higgins said police were pulling into the parking lot as Cope was confronting the attacker.

"We commend him," Higgins said. "But we don't encourage people to take that kind of risk. He could have been hurt."

Ok, so now we ned to start a campaign to ban all knives! Especially ones shorter than a 3.5 inch blade. How about mandatory safety scabbards on them?

Sorry to make light of a serious situation but I think you get my point!

Someone might have been stabbed in the neck but hey... :barf:

This is mind-boggling.

I heard the basics of this event on my car radio today at work. So when I got home, I looked up the story on Fox news. It was reported that the hero "tackled" the assailant. There was no mention of a gun. And this was Fox news.

Did anyone else read early reports that failed to mention any firearm involved?

upon further thought

This is really a groundbreaking event, folks.

We have a maniac stabbing and slashing several coworkers, some who were critically injured, and he was finally stopped by a gun carrying citizen.

How far will this resonate?

Jeff, when I read the story on FOX, it was the same as the posted text, including the part about the gun. I left work at 2100 CDT, so it was there then. It's there now. Methinks you might have misread it. ;-)

Sampling...

Reuters: No gun mentioned.
The attacker was wrestled to the ground in a parking lot and arrested.

Associated Press: Gun mentioned/Caveat about how dangerous the act of self defense is http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-supermarket-stabbing,0,1766533.story

Interestingly, USA Today's article (source from AP) makes no mention of a gun: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-07-21-schnucks_x.htm
Though in all fairness the report is from early afternoon. However there are no updates that I can see after this. Probably dropped the story like a hot potatoe once they say it might show guns in a positive light.

FOX News: Also from AP. Gun mentioned. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,204949,00.html

NBC San Diego: Also from AP. NO mention of gun. http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/9555861/detail.html

WKYC : Also AP. Plenty of gun mentioning. http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=54712

Albuquerque Tribune: Also AP. NO gun mentioned. http://www.abqtrib.com/albq/nw_national/article/0,2564,ALBQ_19860_4860994,00.html

WBIR Knoxville,TN: Also AP. NO gun mentioned but a complimentary WVIL knife picture to accompany the article even though the article says they were KITCHEN knives http://www.wbir.com/news/regional/story.aspx?storyid=36253

Edit: And UPI. No mention of the story at all that I can see.

Sounds like this Higgins guy is a complete :cuss:

KD5NRH,

Knock yourself out.
They were all based on the original AP story. They edited them down to remove the gun-in-self-defense angle.

The "AP no-gun version" was too identical across multiple papers to be edited locally to remove gun content.

I believe there was more than one version of the story available from AP, "gun" or "no gun" to suit the whims of local editors.

Reuters was no-gun.

The story about the story

This may be a case, like the Dan Rather Affair, where the "story about the story" is more significant than the story itself. I have already writtten to FOX31 news in Denver about the apparent inaccuracies.

I'd like to track down the individual person who decided to make these changes.

I'm not aware that Amendment 1 grants a license to lie. Somebody advise me if its language has changed in the past 200 years.

The gatekeepers in the media are already at work. I'm surprised that instead of knife that they have not yet inserted "AK-47". I know on television they will report stabbings and show an image (Justin, what's that called?) of a pistol or an AK-47.

Let's hound them. The gatekeepers cannot be allowed to pull their usual tricks.:)

I caught a graphic like that once (pistol) on the 5:00 News. I called the station and pointed that out. It was corrected on the 6:00 News and properly had a knife graphic.

The history of journalism is that lies, distortion, and half-truths are the norm. It has pretty much been that way since the printing press was invented. A few individual reporters and papers (WSJ comes to mind) are generally pretty good about fact checking, but in the rush to sell newspapers, they tend to print what sells (the norm today) or what the owner wants (the norm in days gone by).

If you think today's journalists are bad, you should look back at the stuff that was printed in the mid to late 19th century. Eastern newspapers basically invented out of thin air the notion of the wild west.

"We commend him," Higgins said. "But we don't encourage people to take that kind of risk. He could have been hurt."

translated as:

"Thanks for risking your own life in intervening and possibly saving the lives of 8 other people by stopping this nutjob. However we don't encourage selflessness and bravery; you should run away next time and let the madman do as he pleases." :barf:

Now let's think about this for a minute. I have a gun, the BG has a knife and is several feet away from me.

What are the chances of me shooting him before he can get to me?

I would think pretty darn good, which reduces the risk greatly.

And where are the cops when all this is going down?

As normal they are not where the action is.

Not really their fault though. After all, somebody has to call 911, the dispatch has to dispatch the police officers, and then the police officers have to be transported to the scene.

By now the BG is nomally gone, except when there is an armed civilian around to take charge and stop the BG.:D

Classic journalistic spin. Do police pull guns? No, they draw them. Muggers and thugs pull guns.

"When he turned around and saw my pistol, he threw the knife away, put his hands up and got on the ground," Cope told The Associated Press. "He saw my gun and that was pretty much it."
This is, in my opinion, what the anti-gunners need to hear. Many that I know seem to think that the introduction of a gun in a conflict necessitates someone dying; after all, killing is what guns do.

The St. loius post dispatch ran a picture of one of the injured and had a short blurb out to the side from the ap stating that the Knife weilding man was "tackled" no mention of the gun

Reminds me of the Pearl school shooting
