OK. I own several Remington shotguns and have never had a problem removing a magazine cap to tear one down before today. A buddy brought his over to install a new fore end (yes, I have the proper tools). This gun has a mag extension that is threaded into the cap (not integral as some are). It screws out easily but the darned cap it freakin' tight! Bud says he bought it new that way and has never taken it down. Factory part??? Are they gluing the caps on now? Do I need heat? :cuss:

I think it's just tight.

You might try setting the cap down on something hard and whacking the end of the extension with a plastic mallet a few times to jar the threads loose.

And penetrating oil.

It's an early version of the Express Tactical. Factory 2 round mag extension, Knoxx SPecOps folding stock (hate 'em), fixed choke, front bead sight only. The extension screws out of the mag cap easily, leaving the hollowed out cap screwed down hard to the barrel ring. Whacked on it with a plastic mallet, drizzled in some penetrating oil, waiting. The thing is pristine and has never been fired.

For reasons not understood, Remington often installs the coupling so tight, some of them get damaged during removal.
They've been told over and over MANY times that they're installing the coupling too tight, but they continue to do so.
The don't seem to do this on the Police guns. Why they do it on the commercial guns is a mystery.

To remove, use a small strap wrench or a large set of well-padded pliers to get a good grip on the coupling.
If you damage this one getting it off, contact Remington and complain. They'll send you a new one.

To reinstall, screw the coupling on finger tight, then give it one more "click".
The coupling should be snug against the barrel ring and the barrel should be tight in the receiver.
However, you should be able to remove the coupling with just your fingers.

When installing the extension tube, screw it in until it JUST contacts the guns magazine tube, then install the clamp.
If you screw the extension in too tight, the pressure may cause the two tubes to misalign, causing stoppages.
If you don't screw it in until the makes contact with the magazine tube, there may be a gap that will cause stoppages.

dfariswheel, I've owned 870s since 1965 and this is the first time that I've encountered this problem. How long have they been torqueing the darned things this tight? It's ridiculous!

This seems to have shown up with the Express and Tactical models fitted with the factory extension.

As I said, this doesn't seem to appear in any of the Police models, just the Express guns.
Why???????

Also as said, Remington has been told often enough, and has had to give owners new couplings damaged trying to get them off, that they know this is a problem.
This leaves the conclusion they're putting them on that tight on commercial guns for some reason.
