I guess most know about the Serbu RN-50 by now if you watch shot show coverage. (note: i missed this one) But for those that don't, well now you know it exists at least!

I guess Serbu got together with a YouTube celebrity Royal Nonesuch. If your a Youtuber and follow a few of the gun guys out there you have probably seen a few of this young kids builds. Fun and easy slam fire shotguns made from iron pipe and the "such" including a homemade 4 barreled, chest mounting 12 gauge slam fire shot gun.

I guess that's the reason for the RN designation in the RN .50. Serbu known for building more affordable BMG rifles figured hey this kid has something to give. So he brought him in for advice on building a functional bare bones and easy manufactured 50.

Seems that what they have come up with is a sub $900 single shot, breach loading break action ( not sure the break action fits..but ill leave that to you to decide) .50 cal rifle that' said to weigh in at a measly 17lbs.

Now I'm no 50 BMG expert when it comes to civilian rifle stock but i definitely think its cool. Not sure its much more than that as far as having a practical use for anything but to have a BAG with a lot of boom! Besides that is what a BMG is. A cool round.

Please keep any discussions civil.

Anyways i thought that if someone had not seen it yet they might want to take a looksee....

Right? Not a stretch if your really wanting a big rifle but we all know ammo cost more than a gun does....well at least many of us do.

I built my 50 BMG years ago but the most expensive part was the Lother Walther chambered blank ($350) but $900 seems like a deal for the number of sales. Any photos of the action they are using?

There's a video in the link that shows it. I guess there's a few more pictures available from serbu http://www.serbu.com/rn-50.html but im not sure there's much detail as to the action.

Might be some more info on Royal nonesuche's YouTube channel. Might swing in there and see .

I'm guessing there will be changes along the way as it is with most any production gun. But fron my understanding its a go model in production according to Serbu sight.

.50 BMG is the last cartridge that should ever be chambered in a break action.
Well it had a screw on breach cap. So its contained pretty well. That's why i said is it a true break action.

Had it been what i call a break action i would concur it would be questionable at best.

YouTube celebrity Royal Nonesuch

Just watched a couple of his videos. He's gonna blow his face off, unless the feds lock him up for his unregistered AOW "Derringer".

hot rolled or EWS plumbing pipe and cast fittings are not suitable barrels and breech blocks.

before that contraption was ever a thought from Serbu...I heard he took pre-orders for his su-15 pistols and carbine since April of last year. up until this day those who put money down or paid in full never got nothing....ouch, takin people's hard earned money and not delivering, but instead put that contraption of a 50bmg before the su-15

His derringer is "apparently" using rifled barrels, not his standard black pipe fare.

His builds are pretty weak sauce, not much more than dolled up slamfired pipe fittings.

I'm honestly surprised after seeing his videos and his lack of safety (no ANSI rated eye pro, iPod earbuds for ear pro) that Mark Serbu would collaborate with him.

I'm not big into the .50 BMG unless it's belt fed and on a vehicle mount. Certainly not interested in a 17 pound "featherweight" with a screw in breach block. I've seen enough rolled and stretched threads on metals with a lot less than .50 BMG level force acting on them. Although, if I really absolutely needed a .50 BMG, this is about the only option that could ever fit my budget.

Mark Serbu is no fool, he's not going to take a chance on building a rifle for someone else that's a piece of crap. What he's doing is helping someone else get their product to market nothing more.

Mark had an accident early in his career and swore he would never let it happen again. So if he's getting involved in someone else's design, I'm sure it will be 100%.

If you haven't got on the list, you've got a long wait. From what I hear, guys that placed their orders at SHOT won't get them until the end of the year!

I can't understand why a respected firearms manufacturer would want themselves associated with that guy. :scrutiny:

It seems sort of like the USMC putting Gomer Pyle on its recruiting posters...

Btw jmorris do you still have the one you built by chance?

Yes, will have it until I kick the bucket and the 2nd owner has already been picked.

I can see SOME merit, or rather very little merit to the gun. A man can take a barrel, and some other bits and certainly make a functioning firearm. Bolt actions are simple, break actions even more so since you are not dealing with a magazine or locking lugs integral to the reciever. A whole lot of folks see this setup and have the reactions above, and terms like deathtrap, darwinian, etc come out. I on the other hand see an opportunity for a person to get into a 50 for a couple grand, and do it safely IF they reload their own and keep pressures low. Let's be realistic about this, a 17 pound rifle will not be pleasant to shoot with full power loads, and a person considering this rifle probably can't afford a barrett, but couple the Lee classic cast, a set of dies, the brass, bullets, powder, primers, gun, and cheapest .50 rated scope you can find and your in the low 2k range. Blast away, and be king of the mountain...but keep the pressures low and don't push it.

I'm no engineer so take my comment with a grain of salt. You're basically putting a pipe bomb a few inches from your face. Since that is the case, I think that I personally would like to have the highest quality materials and machining when it comes to a .50 bmg. I'm not saying this gun doesn't have that, I don't know, I've never seen one in person.

That said, it's cool that someone is trying to get the price point of the 50 bmg down to make it financially accessible to more people. I know what I paid for my Barrett and trust me when I say that my wife won't let me forget it!

i dont see anything wrong or frightful of it, its a break action.. so long as the action was designed to be strong enough to handle the forces it shouldnt be a problem.. just a single shot like many, if not most 50BMG rifles out there, it just uses an action thats a bit different that doesnt require broaching raceways

personally, i think a falling block action would have been better

I believe J Morris built a Maadi Griffin from the plans that used to be sold on line. Owner went to prison for being a dumbass and then made things better for trying to hire a hit man to kill the judge.

So he'll be in prison until hell freezes over, he'd be out already if kept his mouth shut and let his lawyer take care of things. He was making good money selling the plans, I have a copy and with basic machinist knowledge you can build one. The most expensive part was buying a barrel, from there you just had to have the receiver heat treated.

The other thing was he was going to release plans for a home built semi auto .50 until he was raided and they found a gun in his possession (not good for a felon). Anyway, the Maadi Griffin looks like a LAR Grizzly if you want to look it up.

Very interesting. Did not know that. Thanks for the share. When i get time i will check it out.

Wreck n Crew,

Look up Bob Stewart and the Maadi Griffin, all this went down in 2000-2001 time frame. Total fiasco, all of which could've been avoided.
