98/29 Persian

Hmmm.

I did a search here, came up with limited info. Anyone own one of these? The consensus seems to be that they're among the best Mausers out there. I'll look at my SurplusRifles.com CD for the basic facts, but I'm mostly interested in user info. Who has one? Any tales to tell?

I have a couple, purchased mid-90s. Not much to tell, well put together 8mm, they are safe queens, but I'm happy to own them.

Are these things still around? What are they going for now?

From what I've seen, they are starting to get a little rare and you'll pay a lot more than your standard Czech or Yugo Mauser. I'm very intrigued by them though, I'd love to have one!

Samco has them, for about $600. I'm not sure what this one will set me back. I'm hoping my seller doesn't stumble across Samco's site before next week.

Yep, bought one about 5 years ago for $200 from samco. Samcos 'Very good' condition- it has a few stock dings and some of the finish is worn off around the wrist and forend, but the metalwork is pristine. Looks to have had very few if any rounds fired through it before I got it.

FWIW, its nearly identical to a Czech 98/22- with the differences being the 98/22 lacks finger grooves in the stock and has different sight graduations (starts at 400 meters versus 100 for the 98/29). The 98/22s are getting more difficult to find, and finding one in the same condition as a 98/29 would be almost impossible.

Awesome rifles. They used to be dirt cheap. I remember when they were priced in the same range as Yugo Mausers.

Well, I got one. She's beautiful, with one blemish; looks like an area of oxidation from being stored in a rack. Mirror bore. Bolt is packed with cosmoline.

It originally came from Samco. It has their import mark, and kudos to them for putting it in a very out-of-the-way place and keeping it small (between barrel and cleaning rod, in front of the bayo lug).

The previous owner never fired it. I dunno who had it before him, but it looks like it might have been unfired since it was arsenalled. Lord knows there was enough cosmo in the bolt.

I'll do the picture thing once I get done taking it apart and figuring out how to put it back together.

The bolt was fun.

PS Actually, I'd done Mauser bolts before, but I could not figure out how to get the extractor off of this one.

I've long maintained that signage or verbage in foreign language is cooler than a language you know. It lends the commonplace an air of mystery. This explains why I like to listen to gregorian chants or catholic services in Latin.

I know full well that the Farsi says something on the order of "Made in Brno" and the squiggles on the rear sight are range markings, but it is fun to pretend that it is a curse against infidels or an orison to Allah the Merciful. Kinda on the same order of a sign that looks oh-so-cosmopolitan in a foreign city that actually says "Do Not Allow Dogs to Poop on Sidewalk".

Of course, at THR we speak baby talk in any language to our rifles, "oh, who's a good boy?".
