I'm looking for a companion to my 9mm XD Service, I want to stick with 9mm because of its availability, and I reload 9mm. I'm looking for a smaller 9 mm for CCW. Here's what I'm considering. I cannot be talked into anything Kel-Tec or the Ruger LC9.

  • Ruger SR9c
  • Smith and Wesson Shield
  • Glock 26

If you're happy with your XD I'd stick with the XD subcompact. Same grip angle and function you're familiar with.

But then again you may just be looking for an excuse to get something different. Totally valid and understandable too.

I could not find a 9mm I liked except for the SR9C. The G26 had a recoil just a little too sharp but I felt I could learn to shoot it if there was nothing else. But I was a little less than confident carrying a 9 mm. Then I found the SR40C is the same size as the SR9C but in 40SW. It won the contest: still concealable (with an IWB) but powerful. It might replace my MP40FS as my general defense gun.

O.K. I'll go with Byrd666 and second the SR9C. It's a great gun and I believe the best value for the dollar. My has been flawless and it's comfortable to shoot. But if you want small that's not brutal, it's hard to beat the Kahr .

A friend/co-worker just bought a Diamondback DB9... I haven't shot it but it feels good and is nice and compact... he seems to like it a lot and it has become his regular carry gun.

If I were you I'd go with the XD compact. No better companion for the gun you already have. If you already had a full size Glock, Ruger, S&W, Taurus or whatever I'd say stick with the same brand, and caliber, if it's working for you. Myself, I already had a GP100 so for CCW I went with an SP101.

Another vote for the SR9c. Not one hiccup, fits my hand better than any gun I've ever shot, more accurate than I can be. Regardless of price (which, BTW is lower than the other choices), it would have been my first choice.

XD9sc , you could use the mags from your XD service for the XD9sc just a thought, one
thing that is the most important for ccw is a good holster. A good holster will make all
the difference in the world.

I've never carried the Ruger or the Smith, but have carried both the Glock and the Springfield. In the end, I settled for a Kahr. It has decent capacity, is small and slim. It's just plain more comfortable to carry. The DAO trigger is very smooth and consistent as well.

Walther PPS. Beats the pants off any other concealing nine. It's thin and reasonably light, but still has enough structure to be shot well.

I'd personally go with a S&W M&P9c only because I'm thrilled with my M&P40c I purchased last year. The shine's still on the apple. I'm sure the S&W9c is equally as nice.

I second the Walther PPS. It is on my list, but I will also look at the new M&P Shield.

Nothing wrong with a G26, but being double stack a little chunkier than the above.

I voted for the XD subcompact. Since you already have a XD, there's the advantage of familiarity AND magazine compatability. However, for a CCW, you should consider something that DOES NOT have a 'safe action trigger system' without a manual safety, regardless of the brand name. I personally carry a Kel-Tec P11, and would choose it over the Ruger LCP, but since you don't want either of them, you might consider a Charter Arms CARR in 9mm.

The G26 has an impeccable track record and is a very mild, easy to shoot, concealable and versatile pistol. Since its inception, it has been the sub-compact 9mm that all others are measured against. Even if Glock grip angles don't work for you, they are easy to get along with. Honestly, no one has really come out with anything that blows it out of the water. Why fight it?

I voted for the Shield. It's probably gonna be me CCW. Second choice of those listed would've been the XD.
