Yesterday was a cool rain day in central Wisconsin. Great day to catch-up cleaning my handguns.
As I cleaned my 10mm, 45acp, 380acp, 41mag, 44mag, 45LC, 357mag, and 38 special pistols. I thought what go they do, that I can't do with a 9mm?

Yes, for handgun hunting I would want more energy. So I could do that with the 44mag, 41mag, or 10mm. So let's go with a hunting 44mag handgun. A Ruger SRH 7.5" barrel with a 2 power scope that weights about the same as a rifle.

After that??? I have a micro 9mm (2 of them) they are great for concealed carry.
A sub compact and 2 compact 9mms. Great for IWB or OWB carry and for night stand guns.
I also have a full size gun that is a ton of fun on the range in 9mm.

OK, I hear a few arguments in my head! I need a 1911. Well I can get those in 9mm along with 2011s, the improved version.
I'm a revolver guy! 9mm pocket revolvers are available. And Jerry M set the plate record with a S&W 327 in 9mm.

Look at what Law Enforcement and the Military use = 9mms.

I need a wilderness carry! Phil Shoemaker shot a Brown Bear with a 9mm loaded with 147 grain hardcast.

Maybe I should sell them all (except for the 9mms) and buy good whiskey 🤔 I'm sure that a few of you think that I spiked my coffee this morning 😃.

Prove me wrong please 🙏 I don't want to sell them all.

Or maybe I should go down to this great handgun.

Other than that anchor for a small boat you posted a pic of.

I could be on the same boat as you,FAR too many and ammo for all.

I can and have made that same argument in my head too many times.

But one thing that stops me is the HUGE amount of paperwork required to get them gone [ this state sucks].

So keep cleaning and enjoy.

Note that I just added another caliber & gun to the pile.

S&W .30 super carry !.

Yeah - 9mm is good at what it does.
Which includes (generally) being relatively inexpensive and easy to find.

Even if I was all about 9mm, I could still see room in my life for .45 Colt.
There are also handgun applications I would rather use .22LR for as well.

9mm/.38SPL are fine medium-bore cartridges for many roles and tasks ... unless you prefer something larger, which uses a heavier bullet weight.

Interestingly enough, while I own almost (1 shy) as many .45ACP's as I do 9's & .40's combined, I own more .38/,357 snubs than I do 9's. I typically carry a .38/.357 snub or a .380 (LCP) as a retirement CCW, my second preference is one of my 9's or .40's, simply for size/weight compared to my .45's.

While I was an staunch believer in .357MAG, .45ACP & .44MAG as a young cop, over the years in which I put increasing emphasis on my training/practice (especially after becoming a firearms instructor) caliber became of lesser importance to me.

Folks ought to be able to suit themselves ... but hopefully as long as they don't do themselves a disservice of fooling themselves about their skills. ;)

For some folks, that is what they can afford!!!

No one is discounting that fact.. That said, How many are out there punching paper exceeding the cost of the gun quickly?

LEO & MIL mission is far different than a civilians getting groceries at the local store.

You do you though.

I think the Hi-Point get a bad rap. Yes they are ugly, yes they are heavy, and yes they are kind of cool.
I like this 9mm also.
20240907_083953.jpg I was going to buy a 2011 and then I found this Canik TTI Combat.

In principle, down-sizing the number of cartridges does make sense, especially as I get older. Centerfire Magnums are not my friends, anymore, except for .357 in rifles. 9mm is a quite versatile cartridge. Miniaturized 9mm pistols, however, are not my friends, as my hands age. I favor nines that have duty-sized grips. My attention is shifting toward relatively mild .38 Special, and the various .32 cartridges, for compact handguns. Then, there is the small-bore rimfire. I cannot imagine life without .22 LR and/or .22 WMR. i recently acquired a .22 WMR Ruger Single Six.

So, I am not ready for 9mm to be my only handgun cartridge, and I have not even gotten to the fun stuff, which includes .45 ACP and .45 Colt.

Just saying they're a LOT of Hi-Point carbines in use. Tones of them get yeoman / grunt duty day in day out. Sold so many to seniors retiring to their little spreads, homesteading. Value. I'm betting if things kicked off. You'd see a LOT of immigrants run'd-OFF by track suit retires from the neighborhoods. "Git-OFF-MY-LAWN!" lol ... I'll be using my Ruger PC carbine 😉

Yeah
That's another thing.
A good many pistol rounds perform
out of character in a rifle.
I can attest to 357mag and 44mag
looking like some different something
hit the animal using a pistol round

Why are they going to shoot at the guy mowing the lawn?

I'd hate to be limited to only one caliber. Even after giving it a lot of thought, I can't come up with an answer that makes me happy.

My great-grandfather, at one point, owned a ranch in TX. He had only one pistol, as far as I know, and since I now own it, I know the caliber. He picked .38ACP for his one caliber. I'm not sure how much insight that provides given that .38ACP is now obsolete. Also, it appears he bought it in 1911, so his options for caliber would have been much more limited than ours would be today. Still, I guess it worked for him although I'm not sure how much actual shooting use it got in his lifetime.

Dibs when you sell them

20 years ago, I believed the nonsense about 9mm being an inferior round. Now, it is my EDC and "go to" for almost everything. I'm not getting rid of my 45 or 10mm, but they just don't get as much use.

After an incident with an Iowa bred trash panda, I upgraded from 22 WMR to 9mm for chicken coop patrols. He soaked up 4 hits to his body, and then sauntered off into the cornfield. 9mm works better on those guys.
