9mm Glocks.

The LGSs are littered with Popo trade-in 22s and 23s.
I'm not spending nearly $400 for the gun and then have to shell out a couple hundred more for a 9mm conversion barrel and mags.
I have no use for a .40, because I own 9mms and .45s.
If I want hicap-easy shooting, I carry a 9.
If I want big bullet-hard hitting, I carry a .45 or a .44 Spl.
I don't need to further complicate my ammo supply logistics with yet another round.

The SR9 is right about the size of a 19 or 23, but holds 17 rds, just like the 17.
The grip fits my hands better (very important).
It has a much better factory trigger, is accurate, and reliable to a fault.
One of my requirements for a new 9mm carry gun was that it HAD to be AT LEAST as reliable as a G19.
It also had to be about the size of a G19 or a Colt Commander.

I was actually wanting a G19, but it would have to be a Gen2.
Couldn't find any. Not used, anyway.
One of my local shops occasionally gets one in, and they sell them for $450+ tax.
Even at that price, they sell the same day as they're put out for sale.

You will have a hard time finding a gen 1 or 2 glock. Ive been looking for a glock 17 with a flat front strap for a few years. They pop up on gunbroker now and again but they usually cost more than a brand new gen 3.

I had to take a crappy cell pic:

IMAG0680.gif

All I did was flatten out the "humps" on the finger grooves...10 minutes with a file and you're done. In a day and age of grip reductions and stippling with soldering irons and epoxy....I'm surprised people are balking at that.

Worked for me, that's all that matters.

Well, I had a chance to molester a few more of them over the last few days.

I certainly prefer the weight and size of the 19.

I got to compare a Gen 4, and a Gen 2.

I must say, I prefer not having the finger nubbies, but that is more of a nit than anything.

I got to feel a 17 that had Talon grips on it, and I for certain will be adding a set of those to whatever model I end up choosing.... although its certainly leading down 19th Avenue.

Unfortunately, the few folks that had what I was looking at weren't really that versed in the differences between the gen 2 and gen 4- other than the finger nubbies, and that the gen 4 needed armorer reworking for the highest margin of safety.

Can someone run me through that little world for a second ?

Also, I ran into a bluster of confusion in glock 9mm magazines at the LGS, that left the counter folks and 2 avid customers barking at each other politely for some time... Not really sure what that's all about, either. I was simply wondering about the interchangeability of the 9mm mags between the models, and if higher cap magazines were available for the 19. If I'm gonna go smaller bore, I want as many bangs as I can get in that trade.

The sub-compact (G26) can use mags for G19 (15 rounds), G17/34 (17 rounds), and G18 (34 rounds)
The compact (G19) can use mags for G17/34 (17 rounds), and G18 (34 rounds)
The standard size (G17) can use G18 (34 round mags)

The Gen4 mags have two slots to allow left hand mag release.
The Gen3 mags have only one slot for right hand only mag release, but will work find in Gen4 guns if you have right hand mag release configured.

You can put +1 and +2 base plates on any of the mags, this is common with G26 to increase the round count from 10 to 11/12 and to give support for little finger

Gen 2 to Gen 3. Finger groves and sight rail.
Gen 3 to Gen 4. Extended mag release, double recoil spring, extra mag (3), backstraps and texture.

As to the armorer being needed for the Gen 4's. This is the main problem with the internet. Nobody reads the dates on anything they read online and they think they are still reading the most relevant and current info. LGS's are no better some times. Lots of old non-current info.
If you don't need the backstraps and you plan on putting a talon grip on then you may not need to spend the extra for the Gen 4. A 3rd mag will cost you $25 though.

Glock 17L with a 9" Wolf barrel

I wish I could shoot those Underwood +P+ Gold Dots into a block of gelatine out of this:

Good lord, how long is that 17L barrel?

9" Wolf barrel

Thank you for the breakdown, coolluke.

It looks like 3rd gen might work for my needs then.

If for some reason I couldn't find a 2nd or 3rd gen by the time I go to buy, I guess I could just file off the finger nubbies, and put the talon grips on, huh ?

A 3rd mag will cost you $25 though.

I'm planning on buying quite a few anyway, but thats a good point.

Speaking of mags.... whats the deal on the 18 mags ? 30 rounds eh ? Where do you find those ?

I know us civvies might have a hard time getting the 18, but what about the mags ?

Edit : Nevermind ! http://www.midwayusa.com/product/11...-17-19-26-34-9mm-luger-33-round-polymer-black

I know that takes a lot of the point out of having a compact pistol, but I like the feel of the 19. And you don't need to have that "ruler" of a mag in there all the time !

You ought to buy a big ham and shoot it with the Underwood ammo.
After all, it's not my money paying for it. :)

The 33 rounders are great fun. Make sure and get the Glock factory mags. They work better than some of the knockoff brands.

Don't be afraid to buy a older used gun. Glocks will last a very long time.

I'm trying to find an older one.

I dont mind having an older piece, im not real hip on tons of extra part "freebies" in new gun packs anyway.

For some reason though, I'm having trouble locating a gen 2 G19 that isn't very seriously abused.

I'm very much against buying things like this online, so it may take awhile.

Yeah, the 33 rounders are loads of fun. If you are patient you should be able to find a used 3rd gen g19 in good shape for a decent price. If not, just buy a new one. You won't regret it, IME the gen 3 g19 is the pinnacle of 9mm handguns.

I'd love to do what TNOUTDOORS9 does, but I live in Illinois. I can't just go into my back yard and do ballistics tests.

But I wouldn't shoot into a ham.

I'd do either bare ordnance gel or the 4 layer denim test to produce apples to apples test results with other barrel lengths and other ammunition.

The Glock line is really versatile isn't it? You've got the little G26 all the way up to the 17L, and there is so much stuff you can do with modifications and aftermarket stuff. You can make a G26L, you can stick a G34 barrel in a G17, you can stick a 17L barrel in a G17 or G34, you can get a 10" barrel if you want.

Glocks are like the Lego sets of the gun world.

I put my G34 barrel in the G26 once. Don't do that. It was a real pain to take apart. Some things fit and some don't. Read up on it first.

Not to be a jerk, But you can not do the things you listed. The dimensions are different enough for all the different glocks that the barrels do not interchange.

The conversion barrels you can buy are designed for this difference

I didn't specify how you make a G26L.

I can show you pics of a G17 with a G34 barrell sticking out of it - it works fine.

Here is my G34 with my 17L barrel installed, and it shoots fine:

Glock doesn't make a G26L - but people have been reducing the grips on the G19 so that G26 magazines fit flush and some of them call it a G26L.

Some people also put G19 barrels in their G26, or threaded barrels in their G26 and have a compnsator at the end.

I'm just saying there is a lot of stuff you can do with Glocks.

Does that mean you can stick any barrel in any frame ? No

Like coolluke01 said - read up on it first.

I have had my G17 since 1989. I had it converted to Gen 3 two years ago. I shoot 115gr FMJJRN for practice and 115gr JHP+p+ for CCW.

I thought it was amazing that that when some owners had some Gen 4 models that were ejecting the brass straight back - it got an enourmous buzz.

Competitors have been experiencing problems with the M&Ps for years - but it never created the same buzz that the Glocks BTF (Brass to the Face) did.

I've owned Gen 2 - Gen 3 Glocks in 9mm, .40sw and .45acp. Glocks are cheap, reliable, durable, simple tools. They are plain and uninspiring to me. I like everything about Glock 9mm guns excluding how well I shoot them vs. guns that fit my hand better. I shoot the 1911, Sig and CZ better. This after >40k through Glocks. I prefer .45acp Glocks to 9mm Glocks, but still own both.

Run. Run as fast and as far away as you can. Save yourself from the Glockbots. :neener:

My experience with my Gen 3 G19 has not been a positive one. Contrary to popular opinion, Glocks don't always go bang every time. In the first 280 rounds, my G19 suffered 5 light strikes. Just for the heck of it, with over 600 rounds shot through, my Bersa Thunder .380 has suffered it's only light strike just this past weekend.

My Bersa also ran rings around my G19 in the accuracy category. Sadly, I think, my G19 departed from me with no remorse. Find a place that will rent you a Glock to try. Try another pistol right after shooting the Glock then decide. Just take what the Glockbots say with a grain of salt. :scrutiny:
