So please hear me out. I have more than one 9mm, but one of them is a Hi-Point C9. I don't expect any love for the gun, but I like shooting it. The only problem I have with it is it won't cycle 9mm hp, but otherwise its a solid gun. I have it for a car gun, I work in an industry where I cannot carry on property, so if I go to work, I either don't have a gun with me or I leave it in the car. I don't want anything expensive sitting in my car (which is under constant camera surveillance), just in case.

So I said all that to say this. Since 9mm FMJ will blow thru most targets, is LRN a viable option for targets made of meat (cougars, coyotes, or other)?

Please address the thoughts on the round where a situation requires that a person cannot use 9mm hp, and THANKS!

I shoot 9mm LRN these as a matter of fact http://www.friendswoodbullet.com/9mm_125grain_RN/p132676_306869.aspx and love the bullet. I fire them for target through a Taurus PT111 Pro, PT92 and Armscor/RIA MAPP1 MS. All 3 eat this bullet like candy. I load have loaded them with Titegroup, Bullseye and HP-38 with good results with a OAL of 1.130. These are very similar to the Speer 4601/4602. They also sell a 115 gr version but I'm not much on the 115 gr regardless as I find the 124-125 work better in my guns in general.

Try something like powerball, feeds like fmj expands like hollow point. also maybee polish feed ramp.

Got a lil love here...

I have the carbine Hi Point and I cast my own 124 gr. bullets out of the Lee cast. I'm assuming the actions are similar and the mags are compatible. I have 100 percent reliability so far and accuracy is better than good as well. Hope this helps.

My BHP does not feed hollow-points reliably, so I reload LRN's for it. Works like a champ. But I've never shot a coyote with one.

I've shot a bunch of lead through my 9mm. All of them were reloads I made myself. I've not seen LRN 9mm ammo in a long while.

NO gun with polygonal rifling should be used with lead bullets.

Well, it'll behave a lot like an FMJ, especially if it is made of a very hard alloy, and produce deep penetration.

Do your part and hit something that the cougar or coyote "needs" and it'll do the rest.

You might try Federal Gaurd Dog, it shouldn't hang up on a feed ramp, although it basically performs like a 380 AUTO.

For defense against mountain lions and coyotes figure first shot accuracy at between 50-100 yards with them facing you. Coyotes don't need a lot of bullet to put them down, but shot placement is paramount.

Feral dog(s) can have very close range encounters and I prefer head shots on a charging feral dog. If you are walking a pet dog then encounters become very unpredictable with coyotes, lions and feral dogs.

My last shot on a coyote turned out to be at 95 yards, I had guesstimated 75-80 yards as it changed directions and trotted toward myself and German Shepherd.

It's rare that you'll see a mountain lion, I typically only get a fleeting glimpse when they visit.

Oh no, maybe I shouldn't have put 1500 rounds of LRN through my Glock 21!:what:

;)

But as to the OP's question, use EFMJ or similar for defensive purposes.

Even better, just wrench on the gun until it fires HP rounds... Start by polishing the feed ramp... then try a slight shim on the mag just under the bullet to get it to point up a little more... try lots of things! worst you can do is destroy your high point... Big deal:) theyre like 150 bucks :)

Thats not exactly true. Many of us shoot lead through poly barrels with absolutely no issues at all. My G21 will eat my lead rounds all day long and not lead foul anymore than anything else.

I'm not discounting your experience if you shoot lead through a poly barrel.

But Glock says 'don't.'

Several other MFG's say 'don't.'

(Most say don't shoot reloads either but many do. Better to err on the side of caution.)

I should say, that perhaps it isnt prudent for one to just shoot any lead ammo through a poly barrel. With some experience reloading, and knowledge of what leading looks like in the early stages, one can do it safely.

I can't find any info on the Hi-Point site to suggest which kind of rifling they use.

I susupect it's good old lands and grooves. Just make sure you clean it thoroughly after shooting lead bullets.

Yeah, urrr, if you, um, look at the pic of them....
Regular rifling

As for the HP, well, QC is known to miss a few and feedramp angel is tricky EVEN ON VERY EXPENSIVE GUNS (go read the 'before you hack your 1911 to death' sticky - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=185506 )

Powerball is one that is designed to overcome this,
so is EFMJ (aka New Jersey special)

EDIT
Well either 1911Tuner has been consolidating or he renamed his sticky...

I do not consider Glock rifling a "true" polygonal rifling rather round barrel with rifling that has rounded rifling.

True polygonal barrels are made of "polygon" shaped barrel like the picture on the right (in this case, "octogonal" rifling):

Here's a picture of Glock barrel - Do you see a polygon? I don't - I see a round barrel with six rounded rifling.

IMHO, shooting lead bullets in Glock barrels can be done but with some considerations. IME, since fouling builds up faster in Glock barrels with lead bullets, I tend to inspect Glock barrels every 200-300 rounds or so and clean as necessary to keep the barrel free of obstruction - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=8560817#post8560817

Well, lets not forget the CZ -82 which is kinda of a squished oval type, having no truly defined 'poly' but rather just enough of the barrel being out of circle to impart spin.

I tend to agree, but glock insists that they have poly rifling and so does basically all the rest of the world. What I know is that before I knew what poly rifling was I was shooting lead out of a glock without any problems.

I do a swab clean after every use on all my guns, and a complete takedown every three sessions. A bit much maybe but I like clean hardware.

I have a Ruger P89 that I bought when they first came out and I use LRN lead for blinking all the time. I'm guessing a thousand rounds easy and have never had a problem. For carry or self defense I use JHP.

Hi point doesn't recommend shooting any reloads but I've shot 100rds through mine with no problems tho mine also feeds Hp bullets fine. Maybe polish the feed ramp and top of the chamber or play with the mag as most of the hi point problems are mag related.
