Good morning everyone, been reloading Ole .45ACP with Longshot for years with a cast 230gr. For a plinking round but now that my wife has a 9mm I thought to eventually tool up for her.

My thinking is stay away from cast & get fmj 115gr. but looking on Hogdon sight it does have load data for Longshot.

Being that sometimes powder can be like hens teeth I'm thinking of using Longshot for both my .45 & eventual 9mm plinking reloads.

Thoughts...

Longshot is a bit slower than I would use in either of those, but there is no reason why it wouldn't work.

I like it in 9mm, but I use it with 115 grain and 147 grain plated bullets.

With 147 grainers, anything from 4.3 to 4.7 grains of LS. With 115 grainers, I use 5.9 grains.

I use Longshot with 124gr GDHP. Best performance is loaded at upper end to max load. Primarily because it is slower. If I remember correctly,(no data in front of me) I use 5.6 or 5.7 gr OAL 1.120. It provides for high velocity at slightly lower pressure than other powder for a given velocity. Will confirm next week if needed.

I've been using Longshot for ions with jacketed 9mm, all weights from 90 grs. up to 147's. I really gets them out there at full velocity while maintaining lower pressures. HS6 isn't bad either, but it runs a little bit lower velocity.

It's a picky powder though, you must work it up toward the top end, or it won't perform very well. I just run it at max+ and have never had issues with pressures or anything else for that matter. I won't post here on the open forum the charges I run, all I will say, is work it up, not down.

While I do like Longshot in the 9mm I do NOT like it in the 45 Auto. While Longshot should be considered on the slow side for the 9mm, for some reason it performs very well. I can not say the same for the 45 Auto. The 45 auto is a low pressure cartridge and Longshot is much better at the top end of the pressure scale so IMO it's a poor match.

In the 9mm I use W231/HP-38, HS-6 or Longshot and will use AA#5, Power Pistol or Zip.
In the 45 Auto I use W231/HP-38 and will use Clays, Zip, AA#2 or AA#5.

Or course there are many others for both cartridges.

I was going to say, pistol + Longshot = Gamestalker, and tell you to give him a shout but I see he's popped in already. He's the resident Longshot guru. Myself, I recently loaded up 200 115 fmjs with it...after testing 20 that did pretty well.

While I don't make a habit of it simply because I save my LongShot for other rounds... I have made a fair number of .45 230 bullets with it. It performed fine for me. While I did not chrono them, acurracy was good, weapon cycled correctly, not too much gunk at the end.

I find LS powder to be pretty versatile. I just wish it did better in .357 mag! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I use Longshot for reloading 9mm and 45. Never had a problem in either round. For the 45 I am reloading 230 gr and for the 9 I'm reloading 124

I used Longshot in .45 with 230s and it worked for me.
Not my first choice but it worked.
If it was working for you in .45 you will be much happier with it in 9mm. It works well in 9mm on the heaver side of the charge scale, ok lower but dirty. Good vels, seems forgiving pressure wise.

Loud :D

Has anybody had decent results with longshot and plated 9mm bullets?
My club had some longshot in stock so I grabbed some.
I mostly shoot 124gr plated in 9mm, but have 115 and 147gr as well.

I used it with plated, coated and lead.
No reason I can think of it won't work with plated for you unless maybe you are shooting them in a carbine and exceed the vel the plated bullet can handle.

I have worked up loads using Xtreme 124gr CPHP's and Longshot and has not settled on any specific load yet. So far I have seen good groupings (1.06", 1.03", 1.36") from 5.3gr to 5.8gr. My impression is that you will see consistent good performance from Longshot in 9mm, but you will just have to work up the load and see what works best for your gun.

Sounds good.
I think I will start from the lower middle end and work from there.
Will report back with my findings.
