Like many I am back into reloading since retail ammo prices are still ridiculous. Since I wasn't preparing for this move I had an interesting mix of components laying around for my first couple batches, so far I haven't found any load data for the combo and hoping somebody here can share their experiences.
Here is what I started with:
- Brass – mixed headstamp single use and range pickup, standard dillon 9mm re-sizing die
- Primer – Wolf small pistol primers
- Bullets – Rainier plated 115gr round nose
- Powder - Alliant American Select – 4.9gr
- 0.002” Dillon case crimp
- 1.125” OAL
Tested out 50 rounds today and am very happy with the results. Nice soft recoil, no flash, no smoke, no excessive fouling, no case splits, no primer cratering, and relatively consistent grouping in my hurried testing.
Being I'm well under the Alliant recipe of 5.4gr, I loaded up 50 more at 5.1gr and am going to give them a try next chance I have to run by the range. Since this is a plinking round and currently all I have are plated bullets I don't think I'll push any harder than that. I don't have a chronograph currently so I have no idea how hard I'm pushing the bullets, that is the next step in this quest.
So finally the question: has anybody else loaded for 9mm using American Select and plated bullets? What were your experiences with the combo?
Right now it feels like I've got a really nice load built up, but keep thinking there has to be something I've missed.
