Well, if the context is civilian self-defense, I would rather my partner be one with a realistic and thorough understanding of the need to survive the investigation, and the legal proceedings after the shooting, as well as having performed well in previous gun battles, against real men, at close range. That elevates the post-WW2 lawmen, and Col. Jeff Cooper, to the top of the list.

I would further narrow the list to a fellow big-city PD officer, because his training and thinking might be more likely to be similar to mine. Partners work best if they use the same tactics, and each has a good idea what the other may do, in the next moment. I have a ton of respect for the Border Patrol, but their mission, though LE, is different, so their training might be quite different from mine. NYC PD training may have differences from that of Houston PD, but, I have read much about it, so, would have some idea.

I have also read much of what he personally wrote, and had a personal conversation with him at the Snubby Summit in 2005, in addition to attending his presentation.

Yes, Jim Cirillo.

I mean no disrespect to any of the other poll choices. This was a matter of picking a partner, to accomplish an apparently life-or-death goal. I would love to meet and learn from any of these men, but one quickly rose to the top as a best choice.

Edited to add: I would have chosen Jim Cirillo, even if I had not personally met him.

I’m going to say Clint Eastwood’s character in the Dollars trilogy. More realistically I would pick somebody like Cisco Kid, Bob Munden, or Jerry Miculek. They are only proven good on paper, but they are fast enough that I probably won’t have to do very much. Then again, if I’m walking into a known hairy situation I’m going with Al Capone because he never once fought a fair fight, and always came out clean on the other side of whatever ugly situation he was in. He just wasn’t great at paying his taxes (or cooking the books to show that he paid proper taxes.)

I don't understand this thread. I'm pretty sure everyone on that list is dead and I'm not going to be in a fight with any of them.

This isn't fantasy football. People die or get permanently injured. They're really not something for idle speculation.
I've never been in a gun fight but I've been on the edge of a couple. If I knew one was coming I wouldn't stick around.

God forbid I should ever be forced into a situation where I have to shoot someone and have an overzealous DA read this discussion and find me choosing sides for death tag

Doc of course. He never had a problem pulling the trigger. No fancy training, no fancy rig. He would just shoot ya and be done with it.

Somebody who knew they were dying, had nothing to lose and flat-out didn't give a damn would be my last choice

Jim Cirilo was in several gunfights at literally spitting distance during his time on the NYPD “Stakeout Squad”.

For those who haven’t read his book, members of this all-volunteer squad were purposely placed in NYC bodegas that had been the primary targets of brutal robbery/murders for months. From day one they were involved in shootings involving multiple armed suspects.

The squad was so successful at interrupting in-progress armed robberies (that usually involved gunfire) that it was disbanded by the newly installed liberal NYPD leadership because people were squawking because the bad guys kept getting shot..

An amazing guy, and one hell of a “chips are down” gunfighter.

Stay safe.

Well, at least one, Jerry Miculak, is still very much alive. ;) I did, however choose a now-deceased partner, seeing this as a thought exercise.

I covered the legal aspects, by making civilian self defense the scenario, and specifying a partner with an understanding of the ensuing investigation and legal proceedings. Then, I chose of the most balanced, caring, ethical, and beloved LE trainers of the 20th Century. I will stand by what I typed. For that matter, I will tell the DA where to find it. Everything I have typed, at THR, is carefully considered.

FWIW, yes, I have been in front of a grand jury, after a defensive shooting incident. Much of what I type, especially in Strategy and Tactics, is driven by that experience.

I went with Jordan for experience. Several on there are fast, but no experience killing a man. Jordan and others are proven gunfighters that I know would and could pull the trigger.
