A .32 Long primer test today

The 27 RP test cases are tumbled/sized and primed again. I'll do the test again before loading a larger quantity.

RP .32 Long Cases with Fed 100 & &B SP Primers @ 50%.JPG

I went to the range after work today and re-shot the same test. This time I shot the S&B SP primered load first, then the Fed 100 primered load second. Often times when I start off with good focus and trigger discipline and shoot a very good group, I tend to get sloppy on the next one, ADD kicks in, get impatient, in a hurry, etc, etc, and then make mistakes on the second group. So I intentionally reversed things today.

I shot a very good group with the S&B primers, then a bigger group with the Fed 100 primers. Much like the other day, just in reverse. I called one shot up out of the group, and the one low is likely me but I didn't feel it or call it. That said, if you throw out those two, the second group is much like the first one, but not as nice and round.

I would say it is safe to say that it is very likely that the S&B SP primer can be substituted for the Fed 100 in this application and that the occasional miss/big group will be us, not the primers.

Benelli MP3-S: 12 shots each target, rested.

The numbers are very close to what they were the other day, although temp & humidity were very different.

Today:

Benelli MP3-S, RP cases (.912 to .915), MBC 98 Gr coated WC, 1.7 Grs N310. OAL .960 +/-, 82 degrees 68% RH.

Fed 100 Primers:

Hi=822
Lo=794
Avg=808
ES=28
SD=7

S&B Primers:

Hi=821
Lo=792
Avg=808
ES=29
SD=7

*Work load up, use at your own risk*

That one shot up and left on the nice group was the gun slipping a hair on the bag while squeezing the trigger, getting the sights off and having the gun fire before I got the sights back on center. *Sigh* All me. :)

Nice shooting,
there always seems to be one bullet or two that just don't want to do what they are supposed to and go there own way.

I was always happy with the S+B SPs when I could get them for good price, switched back to CCI SP because no S+Bs were available where I wanted to get powder
and I didn't feel like paying 2 hazmats.
It will be interesting to see if there is a noticeable difference in the two.

The cases are tumbling again, I could always load half with S&B and half with CCI, and do it again.

Well if you want to:D
Numbers might be interesting.
I would think with small charges in .32 primers would have more effect on vels than in say .45 ACP.
Been a couple years since I used any CCIs SPs was happy with them, tried the S+B SPs because they were on sale at Cabela's and was happy with them as well.
Since they worked for me and were less money I stuck with them.
I hand prime while watching the tube so I don't really notice them being any more difficult to use.
I do notice that I liked the old round try Lee hand primers much better than the later Square and triangular tray versions. Wore out a couple handles on my round tray one.
(Thanks for that 2nd handle BDS!)

I hand prime as well, and they were not difficult, they just were a bit tighter fit and required a bit more force than the Fed 100s. But I also have never thought S&B brass was hard to prime either, so what do I know.

Could they be slightly larger due to being metric? I see that a lot with shotgun 209 primers. The Euro metric ones are just ever so slightly larger that if you use them in Gun Club hulls, for example, and then go back to US primers like Winchester, the Winchesters might be loose or even fall out

They are all loaded up again, 13 with Fed 100 and 14 with CCI 500.

Fed 100s have a magic marker mark on them.

Loads # 31 & # 32 in .32 Long.jpg

Thanks for doing the CCIs, will be interesting to see how they compare to the S+Bs
Used to looking at the S+Bs forgot how much rounder the edges are on CCIs.

Yep, the S&B primers have a wider flat spot across them and a shorter curve on the edges. I guess I might as well do Winchester WSP primers next after this. Don' have any Remingtons. Maybe I'll do some Fed 200s.

Any thread about someone loading and shooting .32’s is a good thread! It’s a shame that cartridge family isn’t more popular... such sweet-shooting fun!

Well if I ever get out of the hospital, I have 2 new 32s to test.

Several weeks ago I bought an SP101 in 327 Fed.
And earlier this week I put in a ridiculously low bid on a 32 acp & actually won it.
It was delivered to my gunsmith yesterday.

(Cost more for the brass, dies, caliber conversion, etc, than it did for the gun!)

I'm envious. Since I've discovered 32 S&W Long, I've wished that new guns chambered in 32 S&W Long were still available. It is cool to see what these guns are capable of. It is too bad the cartridge is not more popular.

Nice work on your testing.

Hit the range after work today. The thermometer said 108 when I got it out of the range bag in the car, but it cooled down to 98 in the shade on the table.

I made the little rest from a four legged adjustable stool a couple of weeks ago. I need to cannibalize another one for the part the shaft screws into to make a lock ring for this one. I rested the barrel of the Benelli on the bag, while I screwed the shaft/bag down a good bit and rested my hands on it for the short Taurus and Beretta .32 ACPs.

I remembered wrong and shot the Fed 100 primered load first, thinking I had marked the CCI primers, but at least I checked before I logged it. But dang nab it, I wanted to shoot the CCI powered load first. As usual, my second group wasn't quite as good as the first. All me I am sure. Not bad though. The CCI 500s gave an average 9 FPS more. The Fed 100s had recently tested at an Avg 810/806/815 (7 shots each) @ 95 Degrees 43% RH, then 801 (12 shots) @ 94 Degrees 37% RH, then 808 (12 shots) @ 82 Degrees 68% RH, and 809 today @ 98 Degrees 34% RH. Statistically not a big difference with the CCI 500s coming in at an Avg 818 today with a slightly smaller ES & SD.

Both primers shot very good groups, if you throw out my two screw ups on the second target.

Oh yea, here ya go. Sitting at the table, barrel of the Benelli rested on the bag on the makeshift rest, chrono at 5 yards and target at 7 yards. I like to do this when I chrono stuff as I think it gives more consistent numbers if I have an aiming point when shooting through the chrono, plus it gives an idea of accuracy potential as well as just getting numbers. All potential good loads get shot at distance to prove themselves. Some fail.

Ouch 108!

Nice shooting, there always seems to be one or two bullets that just don't want to do what they are supposed to. Has to be the bullets fault right?;)

Thanks for the test of the CCIs, I appreciate the info.

PS: Is one of those .32s wanted for a chrono killing?

Thanks (again) for doing all this testing. Today I found a Benelli MP-95 in .32 at my favorite LGS. Will shoot some factory ammo to start off but I'm already shopping for reloading components.

The 27 cases are all tumbled and sized I primed 13 with Fed 100 primers and 14 with WSP primers. All ready to load. Maybe get out to shoot them Thursday or Friday.

Shot the Fed 100 primer load and the Win WSP primer loads this morning. Stared out good, nice and steady with a good group using the WSP load. Only left one hanging out and the other 11 were nice and tight.

Then I had he first five of the Fed 100 load into a tiny hole, loaded another mag full (Holds five) got #6 in there but then left one up high, got aggravated with myself and pulled one low, then got mad over ruining a nice group and blasted the last ones into an embarrassing excuse for a group. Sigh, I know better, and my excuse is I have had a rough week, but excuses are losers. I just did not maintain my composure after screwing up one shot which hadn't even made the group bad, yet. I took care of yet though. Sigh. Firs group was very good, and he second one was looking like it would be as good or better, and then I screwed it up. (Insert primal scream here) Then my "new" mag for my PT-132 Pro wouldn't work, cutout for the mag catch is up too high and the slide is rubbing on the top of the feed lips. Should be able to fix that though. :)

Load # 33 with Win WSP primers. 12 shots, chrono at 5 yards target at 7 yards.

Like the CCI 500 primers the WSP primers gave a little more velocity compared to the Fed 100 primers, but not a lot.

I would need to shoot all these at 25 yards and multiple groups to prove that one primer is more accurate than another, if they are.

For defense, there's nothing wrong with any of it. Every one is center mass and deadly. You can be on my self dense squad anytime.:)

What primers you use obviously don't matter much.

Decided to do two rifle primers today.

I shot the old Fed 200 (A mild rifle primer. (And actually Federal now calls their small pistol mag primer #200))

I also shot the Winchester WSR (Newer brass colored ones)

I shot a great first group with the Fed 200 primers. The first three were in a wallowed out hole. Nice.

Then I shot he WSR primers. The first 7 were in a group as small or smaller than the first group, then bam, one out in right field (What in the heck?), then another in the group, then I got careless and pulled a couple down finishing up. Sigh, screwed up the second group again.

I stapled the second target on top of the first one to shoot the second group, so here is the first target after all 24 shots.
Benelli MP3-S .32 Long Range Trip Pic 24.jpg

And here is the backer after two days and 48 rounds. 12 each of Fed 100, WSP, Fed 200, & WSR primers.

Numbers for today: 92 Degrees 52% RH.

Fed 200 Primers (Old ones marked Small Rifle And High Velocity Pistol)
Hi=832
Lo=808
Avg=816
ES=24
SD=6

Win WSR Primers (Brass colored)
Hi=834
Lo=807
Avg=823
ES=27
SD=7

Numbers are up a tad over the standard small pistol primers. ES & SD good on both.

I need to sort out some same headstamp 9MM brass and load ten each of various "small" primers and go shoot them all at the same time one of these days. That might be interesting. Would need to do both a plinker load and a near full power load. N320/plated and Silhouette/jacketed come to mind.
