I brought these home Saturday from the community garage sale. One is pretty fair quality, the other is just OK. Spike.jpg
It's a Schrade / Uncle Henry Golden Spike. Old enough to be carbon steel, new enough to not have a serial number. It was pretty rusty and dull as dust. I took some steel wool and WD40 to it to clean it up, and sharpened it. It is now a razor. The stone is soft Arkansas. The sheath is perfectly serviceable and not at all brittle. Some of the stitching at the bottom of the stone pouch is missing but no big deal to me. The handle is pretty, but not real stag. It's an interesting knife and will be put in the truck door pocket.

This is an Imperial Ireland. Reading up on these, it seems they are later Imperial knives and not all that much. Still an interesting find and not like anything I already have.

I gave $35 for the Spike and $5 for the Imperial folder.

Good enough day to suite me.

I'm a sucker for the Sharpfingers but I'd have grabbed up the Spike "just because"..
Same here. Those 152 series are my dead-stone favorite skinners and the 153s as shown are either a close second or a fine compliment to the Sharpfingers.

The 153s work great by laying your index finger on the spine, the finger-grooves in your thumb web and controlling the lateral movement with your middle finger on the tang.
These have particularly helpful handles being so full and fairly weighted that they lay stable on the thumb web and minute corrections can be made as you draw them while capitalizing on that beautiful curve of the blade.
Great skinners, those.

Todd.

You might not want to keep the Golden Spike in the truck. The new versions are Chinese made and the older versions have some collectability . I've been wanting to find one in decent shape and some that I've found are over $100. About the best I've found was $80 and the sheath was in rough shape so I passed.

A few years ago SMKW bought a bunch of unfinished Schrade blades that were left over from when they went out of business. They shipped the blades to China and let them install new handles on them and make sheaths for them. They put them on their website for $30 IIRC and I bought 3. One to use, 2 to put back. The blade is old school USA made Schrade. They didn't include the sharpening stone or pouch for it, but that is OK.

Heck, Randall Model 3 has spent time in that door pocket. I like to keep fun stuff in circulation.

I keep a knife in the door of the truck. It has a seat belt cutter and a point for breaking glass. I always have my bench made in my pocket. Under the rear seat storage area is a K-Bar. One knife in door, one under rear seat and one in my pocket. So the answer is yes.

It's good that some will actually use knives and guns instead of just looking at them. But they can still make you another Randall, they don't make USA made Schrade's anymore.

Good point jmr40. Better used than sitting. Never been to a knife or gun fight. Seen many accidents over the years. What I carry in the truck reflects that. I always check out the knifes at garage and flee markets. Never know what your going to find.
