A new type of rifle case

Now for something entirely different...

All the cases I have seen look like....well, gun cases. I prefer something a bit more undercover as I dont like to advertise. I think it will be a love/hate attitude towards it, but I LOVE it.....

























Not mine, but these pics inspired me to DIY my next case. Found an acoustic guitar case on cragslist for $10 and have started converting it today.

I saw something like it many years ago in a movie - dont remember the name but it was a spanish cowboy-type movie. The only thing I do remember about it was that Salma Hayeck was in it (insert drooling icon here).

I use soft-sided bass and guitar cases for some of my guns. Not trying to be cool or recreate the Thompson-in-the-violin-case thing, I just have a lot of guitars, and they don't leave the house very often anymore.

My 16" Saiga .308 with Ace folding stock lives in a 4/4 size violin case. Everybody that sees me open that case stares in disbelief that the gun fits! It really doesn't look possible, but there's actually a few inches left at the muzzle end for a brake. The factory 8 (converted to 10) round mag fits in the string/rosin compartment like it was made for it. I will post a pic as soon as I find my usb/memory card adapter.

My next project is doing a fitted interior for this gun and all it's "stuff" in a viola case. They look about the same but are a little bigger and, more importantly, a couple inches deeper. There is no way to fit my scope on it's QR mount in the current case with the carbine. :banghead:

I've been telling people for years to buy cases at the guitar store and not the gun store. You can get SKB cases that are comparable to Pelican for half the price. They have hard and soft cases for lighting and keyboard gear that'll fit just about any firearm. I've been using an Anvil guitar case for my 870 and it's accessories for years. My Saiga 12 fits perfectly into my Strat semi-soft case, and it has shoulder straps and room for mags.

I picked up a different kind of case just yesterday for carrying my pistols and ammo. It's a "Coffin Case" for guitar pedals. They're discontinued, so I got it cheap.

What constitutes a legal "case" for transporting a firearm?
The Criminal Code refers to "a case, firearm carrying box, shipping box, or other container." However, the Wildlife Code is more specific, defining case as "a container specifically designed for the purpose of housing a gun or bow and arrow device which completely encloses such gun or bow and arrow device by being zipped, snapped, buckled, tied, or otherwise fastened with no portion of the gun or bow and arrow device exposed."

That's pretty neat, if I could figure out how to manage it with only the hand tools I have, I wouldn't mind making one myself!

Get a funny picture of someone that owns guitars too having one and ending up at the range with one, opening it, and realizing he grabbed the wrong case though lol.

+1 on the hard SKB cases. I shipped golf clubs all over the country in one for years and the baggage apes never did succeed in damaging it or the contents. And, from the looks of the outside it wan't from lack of trying; I think the dufouses deliberately try to damage or lose anything they don't think is worth stealing.
