I thought I found the one for me when I bought the kel-tec P-11. It holds 12+1, looks good and can be concealed. I should have tried the trigger first.. Its a 9lb pull and i cant shoot very fast with it, even after some practice.

I like the safely of double action only, but what I'd really like is something with a hammer, and i can leave on double action for the first shot but then goes to single action. I'm not set on this, but it'd be nice. Any suggestions? I'm looking for something in at least a 9mm, maybe .40 but 10mm would be better so I'd feel safer if one of the many bears around here decides to attack.

CZ RAMI meets your description. It's available with either a polymer or alloy frame, and in both 9mm and .40. The 9mm RAMIs enjoyed an excellent reputation from the beginning. The early .40's were not as good. I know, I got one and had to put extra money into it to get it working right. It is, FTR, now an excellent carry gun. So, if you go with a .40 RAMI get a new, recent production example and all should be well.

I never saw one of those before, very nice. thank you. It'd be nice to have a few extra rounds but 8 isn't bad for a .40.

I agree on the RAMI. I've never shot one, but with the SP-01 as my main handgun, the RAMI is under consideration for a CCW.

I would add the Sig 239 to that list - 9mm, .40, or .357 Sig.

Taurus makes many smallish ccw weapons that are DA\SA.
The PT111, PT140, And PT145 all of wich are under $400.

Consider the S&W Model 908. A smallish, DA/SA, high quality 9mm pistol that's a good carry gun and a fine shooter.

It's out of production but a few are still around. Bud's currently lists them as a closeout item.

I'm leaning towards a glock 29.. originally i was against the idea of a DAO but the trigger pull is a very manageable 5.5lbs and 1/2inch. Its also a good replacement for my taurus 605 .357, i can sell it and still feel safe if confronted with an angry bear.

so far my 10 or so black bear encounters haven't been too scary but twice i had to fire to scare it off (not at the bear), as recently as yesterday! it stood on its back legs appearing to take an aggressive stance so i fired a 12 gauge slug into a bank, and damn i learned just hot fast they can run :)
