Last night I was watching Smallville (a show about Superman as a teenager) on CW and they had a very positive scene in which a civilian uses a privately owned gun for self defense.
In the episode, an evil doctor was performing experiments on a blind kid (early 20s). Lana Lang shows up at the kid's house to convince him to stop letting the doctor experiment on him. The doc shows up, pulls a weapon, and threatens to kill them. The blind kid runs to the closet and kills the power. The doc points his weapon at Lana and threatens to kill her, at which point the blind kid returns with a 1911 and says "I allways thought that my dad kept too many guns in the house, now I am glad that he did." The doc then says something like "you can't see", the blind kid shoots him (low COM) and says "but I can hear".
It was a little far-fetched and cheesy, but it is a show based on comic books. However, I though that I was a very positive portrayal of using a personal gun for self defense. There was no negative fallout from the shooting, and no negative comments about guns being in a middle class suburban home.
It's a pretty rare thing to see something like this on TV and I just thought I'd share.
