Local gunshop has a Puma .357, in stainless for $500. Looked and felt real nice but that seems kinda high to me. (This shop was also selling a Norinco SKS for just over $300 among other outrageous prices, so I started thinking he's just a sucker trap.)

I've been looking for a .357 levergun for a while and every time I see some it's 30-30, 22LR, 30-30, 45-70 (ooh!), 30-30, 22LR, etc...

What do you guys think?

BTW, will a Puma feed .38s? I know some leverguns choke on 'em.

Hmmmmmmmm... Puma?

I looked it up on Google and found "Rossi". That name I recognize.
Wonder how many folks were led off the trail by that one?

My recommendation would be to find a Marlin Lever .357 and stick with that.
I had a '94 in .44 Mag and it was simply AWESOME... I Was STUPID and sold it.

Good rifle, but that may be MSRP

Or darn close to it. Shop around and you could easily knock $100 off that price.

I've seen them at Gander Mtn for high three's. You can get the .454 Casull version for less than 5 in some places.

Jim's Gun Jobbery, Been there........many years ago.

My .357 Puma feeds .38 Silvertips no problem, but not cheapo aluminum and lead CCI Blazers.

I have one with the stainless 24" octogon barrel, black walnut stocks and brass receiver. I have been very happy with it. Don't remember what I paid for it.

Where you at in NC DMK?
Western NC. This was in Sylva.

Way too high. Does it have the ugly "lawyer button" on the top of the action?
Yep.

Unfortunately guns are very high around here. And since gunshops have a "thing" against transfers, I'm stuck paying these ridiculous prices unless I want to drive a hundred miles east. Most of the time I just do without.

Gotta love how the govt. forces you to do business with highway robbers. :(

$500.00 is waaaay too high! $400.00 is the most that I would pay. I had a Puma .45 LC for a while. It was a pretty darn good shooter! Paid $350.00 for that rifle.

I got a nib Puma .357 for $350,early in the 21st century.$500 for used is waaaaaaaaay too high.Shop around.Try to go to a gun show. They have regular gun shows in Hickory NC.

BTW, will a Puma feed .38s? I know some leverguns choke on 'em.
If people would read the owner's manuals for said rifles, they would feed properly. Keeping the proper OAL ensures reliable feeding.

Well....we've established the price is too high stainless or not. I got my Rossi 92 slightly used for $250 a while back. Turned out to be a great deal on a great rifle. Would have got it in 454 if the opportunity had presented itself but she was a 45 Colt which is a caliber I reload and love.

Shotgun news and Gunbroker.com used to provide lists of people willing to do transfers. You might be able to find a local dealer who will work with you.

BTW I ran into a similar deal where I live on the other side of the mountain from you. Got a cold sholder on transfers until I actually bought a rifle from one of local pawn shops.

Once the owner realized I was for real if his prices were reasonable he opened up and offered to do a transfer for me any time I like for $20 if he couldn't beat the price. I consider that very fair. I haven't used him for a transfer yet but I have made other purchases there and visit that shop regularly.

I give my business to people who are fair with me. On the other hand, I'll go out of my way to let people know by word of mouth about dealers who are overpriced, uninformed or dishonest. Frankly I've had better luck from local pawn shops than the local sporting goods dealers. The latter seem to regard everything they have as a priceless treasure or jewelry and are actually kind of snobby. The pawn shop guys are friendly and have a "Let's make a deal" kind of attitude. I like that :)

I paid $415 for a Legacy Puma 24" Octogon CCH brand new and didn't consider that an excessive markup but as others have stated I've picked up other earlier Rossi's for $250.

I've also a .357 Trapper (Rossi marked) that feeds .38's just fine. But the Missus has laid claim to that one :scrutiny:
