A Serious Reminder--Think before Posting (etc.)

I agree with many post above. Each of us are adults and need to be prepared to be held accountable for anything we have every posted. My fear and delicate online manner comes from the fear of a much larger and dominant force in my life than the government, my wife, so I am probably good.;)

Criminal issues, torts, divorces, winning and losing of competitive bids ,contract disputes, hiring decisions, promotions, discrimination suits, admission to schools, and just about anything else must be kept in mind.

The problem is knowing the possible effects in advance.

An email or social media post saying something like "we don't expect that kind of trouble out here--just about everyone out here has a gun" could be completely truthful and perfectly innocent. But it could prove disastrous, if brought to light after an unfortunate incident.

You are responsible for what you say now and what you said 20 years ago. I post here and another forum. No other media. Remember if it’s free, your the product. I was in Germany and Doha last January. We saw a bunch of MG Mini SUVs. I asked about these as we were driving. Later that day my phone had ads for that car brand. The phone stays home when I want to have a private conversation.

Apparently they understand irony.

Possibly true. I understand that yet again, if you lean left, you can break rules and be rewarded for it. Not that a “like” is much of a reward but it is a validation of your political views by two mods. I have been guilty of throwing a political statement around every once in a while. At most my posts go unnoticed but almost always they get deleted with a harsh warning. I have never gotten a like from a mod for a political comment. Seems quite strange.

You understand incorrectly.

Not that a “like” is much of a reward but it is a validation of your political views by two mods.
No. The "likes" had to do with the main message,

As an aside (OP's advice seems mainly geared toward private citizens), I can tell you that a lot of law enforcement careers have gone down the toilet due to indiscreet use of social media. Many of you, I'm sure, follow national news and are aware of the handful of high-profile cases, but folks inside the greater law enforcement community could tell you of hundreds of other cases in probably every state. IF you work in law enforcement and you get in trouble, everything you've ever put out on Facebook or Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, whatever, will come back to bite you in the butt... Most especially if you're critical of your leadership or gloating about your latest use of force ...

which you did not include in your post, and not with the footnote, which was a joke.

I have never gotten a like from a mod for a political comment.
We don't do that here.

Maybe I’m the only one here but about the only ads I ever get are for stuff I looked for using my phone, or stuff I don’t know or care about at all.

Still the point what you post here is and will always be public and can be used against you in a court of law, or in a divorce, or anywhere else.
Fortunately for as long as I can remember I’ve been taught to watch what I say and the older I get more controlled I get. I Also don't get agitated nearly as easily as I did when I was younger, and I’ve always been a fairly laid back guy.

The fine print was a joke.....It was an attempt to add some humor into the discussion. No one has said anything about the political comment in your signature.

Ok it was a joke and I’ll let it go. My signature comments are not political but if they are now a problem let me know.

FWIW I used to post on another forum that is brand specific to S&W and every time I logged in I got an advertisement for plus sized women's dresses from Zulily and it was always the same dress.

If I ever see a woman coming at me wearing an ugly brown sundress and high heeled sandals I will know that my time has come.

I thought that there are ways to stop or mitigate your cellphone from listening.

There are, Take it in the other room and leave it there.

But even then it knows where you're at. When I went through those offices in the middle of the night there was no one there but Facebook started feeding me people that worked in those offices as potential friends.

Every night I worked there I had to go specifically into the bank president's office because he had a door that led from his office out onto a patio and we had to verify every shift at that door was locked. After a week there he was on my Facebook page and I knew it was him because I recognized his name from the plate on the office door.

With all this listening, watching and tracking, it sure is nice to know safeguards are in place so none of this information will ever be misused. It would be terrible to be targeted or suppressed in any way just because of who you're near or what you say in ear shot of your phone even with no laws being broken.
