A shooting at the Range

The club is opening the range starting Friday morning except for tactical bays 7 and 8.
The photo from clubs website, has me wondering where the dirt bank ends & brush begins?

Little trees & overgrowth are not going to stop bullets.

I'm sure clubs like that are great, but how do you even get a foot in if you don't already know someone in there? I wish clubs like that could just vet the new people, without also require that a member recommends them first.
Its really easy- schedule a day where applicants are assessed on the rules of firearm safety with a written test with no prior review or study guide, followed by a short and simple range session under close supervision of safety officers, and then assign a sponsor is one way. The club I belong to in here in Florida, I filled out an application that asked about my firearm experience, and I also provided a copy of my DD214. Having been a prior member of 7th SFG, the club didn't have any problems finding other members who knew me or at least knew of me. Others provide copies of things like LE credentials, NRA certs, or proof of experience as a competitor. The club I belonged to in NC I asked to join after I participated in a action pistol match that the club put on, which proved my level of competence/safety. They didn't care if I placed dead last and missed every target as long as I did it safely. Clubs that want good members paying dues to keep the place running will often show some leniency in the "who do you know who is a member here" part, since experienced new applicants may have previously been in a different club in the area or recently moved there from somewhere else, or are joining a club for the first time after mil or LE service. Some clubs may have new members on a restricted/probationary status for a period regarding what they are allowed to do. Policies like these are used by "good" clubs who want good members to have good experiences while insuring the safety of everyone, and improve the reputation of the club.

Looks like our old sheriff's range, overgrown with vegetation at the top of the berm.

We used to shoot USPSA matches at the private range on leased county property next door. The sheriff's office ran some stuff on Saturdays and we would hear bullets going over our heads toward an industrial park. The private club finally kicked the IPSC club out but bullets kept showing up in the industrial park. The private range turned ranges north, added eyebrows, restricted shooting positions. Still had bullets going into cars and windows.

The county moved the sheriffs range. Coincidentally, the private range somehow stopped flinging bullets into cars and windows in the industrial park.

A club near me had a death during a match when a gamer gun was not correctly holstered, fell and went off - killing the SO. The gun was not drop safe. I'm leary of skimpy holsters and tricked out guns for more 'speed'. I was score keeper at a match and an old toot was told to make ready. He was shooting a 1911, obviously didn't put the safety on and keeping his finger off the trigger. As he holstered, Bang - a foot from my foot and inches from the SO. Then the idiot started to wave the gun - WHA Happen? The SO (a sheriff) grabbed his gun hand in a death grip.
At the old toot range, a son could not get his Dad to stop shooting during time outs to replace targets as he knew what he was doing - having fought the Kaiser. Did it again at the next time out and thus was removed in a wrestling match with his son to get the gun and stuffed in the truck.

the only shooting I was present for at the range I was at was a State Trooper who shot himself in the leg ,

My club lost its conveniently located range when a city councilwoman - one of those Widow gets the spot until the next election things - complained that "When they hear shooting, the children run and hide." and "It scared an old lady sitting on her porch so badly that she fell out of her rocking chair." This in a 10 year old development about half a mile from the 30 year old range serving club and police department. They pushed us out into the depths of the county.
The councilwoman's (and the mayor's) day job was in real estate, what a coinkydinky.
There were ambitious plans to develop the land the range had sat on and surrounding acreage, and a good bit of money leveling the berms and putting in streets, but there is hardly anything going on.

I've been shooting since I was 16 (almost 71 now) and have had several close calls at organized ranges. First was at a range on the 100 yd rifle line. Behind the berm was the place where clays landed from the skeet range. The range had just gone hot and I was about to shoot when I saw several children standing on the berm. They had been picking up whole clays that had been missed. No one saw them on the rifle range. I shouted cease fire as loud as I could. When I did that the kids ran off. I was shaking, it was a close thing.

Another time I was the only one on at a different range where you paid for the day. I was down about 100 yds changing my targets when gunfire started and bullets were impacting the backstop at 200 yds. I dropped to the ground and yelled. A carload of gangster types and driven up while I was down there, jumped out and started blasting with an AK. Fortunately they stopped when I yelled. They gave a smirking apology and stood there with the AK presumably loaded while I got my stuff and got out of there. I told the old duffer in the office what happened and he said he'd check into it. I never went back.

Lastly I was at a range that was public. I was changing out my target at 100 yds when I heard the RO loud speaker say the range was hot, commence fire. I shouted cease fire and dropped to the ground. Fortunately no one had shot, several on the line said they saw me out there. The RO said my clothing blended in with the berm and cardboard on the target frame and that was why he didn't see me.

The club I belong to now has never had an accident and is not open to the public.

Have seen some stupid stuff at F&W and other public ranges.
Some of it done by mil/LEO folks.

Have also seen Fudd nonsense.

And seen folks be perfectly safe and others rip em for no reason.
Not sure what other issues may have been involved.

Private club and go on days where least activity. Best idea IMHO
