Has anyone ever tried AA1680 powder in either 357 Maximum or 500 S&W Magnum? I have heard it's the most accurate in 357 Max and I'm thinking maybe it might be a great performer in the 500 also. Going to get a pound and see for myself.

AA1680 was recommended to me for my max but I have not found any to play with. If you get some, let us know how it works.

I don't load for the Max, but 1680 is probably the safest powder for it... a bit on the slow side so can't be loaded overpressure - especially useful for deer hunting load in single shot rifles with the Hornady 180gr SSP and 200gr FTX and pretty much duplicates the .35 Remington.

I've used in the .454, too slow for max loads, but works great for slightly reduced loads. Very accurate. Also great in the 7.62x39.

I've used it in my 357maximum encore with satisfactory results but it requires loading cartridges quite long to fit enough to be effective

I don't know the burn rate of the AA1680 powder but I used a lot of WW680 in the 357 max and it worked really good with the 180 grain bullets. I'm not sure how well they compare burn rate wise. WW680 was discontinued a long time ago

I personally have used Alliant Rel-7 at near maximum level in my 10" TC Contender in 357 Max with the 180gr Hornady Single Shot bullet, and it was accurate but down on expected velocity in the short barrel. Using A1680 should be a good choice as it's a tad faster burning according to the Hodgdon site.
I have not loaded anything new in the Max in a while, but I have a can of IMR4227 that could be something to try.

4227 should do very well in the Max. I've been shooting in 357 mag., it is very consistent and accurate. Seems to do best with a compressed load.

I was looking at handloads.com. Nothing for 1680 in the Max, but there were several listings for the 500 S&W.

I've been using around 22 grains of W-296 with a 180 grain bullet with great results.
