I just took the quiz, (you might want to take the quiz for your own state) and then fired off the following:

Dear Charles,

After an internet search I took the Indiana State gun law quiz at about.com.

Some questions/answers are either incorrect or are misleading at best. In fact most of the questions are presented with anti-gun bias.

The first incorrect statement, "Are background checks required at gun shows?" When purchased from a licenced dealer, background checks absolutely are required just like they would be if you walked into their store.

Gun sales between persons who are not dealers are not regulated at the state or federal level, except that both parties must be residents of the state, and that no individual may knowingly sell to a person who could not purchase a gun legally. To prevent one's self from being charged with a crime, most people elect to require that the purchaser have a handgun licence. This insures that the purchaser is legally able to purchase a gun.

There is no so-called "gun show loophole"; the laws of the state apply everywhere in the state even at gun shows. The statement on about.com that says background checks are not required at gun shows is wrong and misleading, and biased and is based on anti-gun rhetoric.

Second, "May the police limit carrying concealed handguns?" The site says no. But in fact they may; by requiring that persons be licenced to carry a handgun there is a de facto limitation on the carrying of concealed handguns. This is more anti-gun rhetoric. The question should be, "May the local police/sheriff (who might not agree with the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms) determine who can and who cannot be licenced to carry a handgun at his/her own discretion?" In that case the answer would be "no". If the background check is clean the permit shall be issued.

Best regards,
Andy

Tennessee Gun law quiz

Question 3 - are background checks required at gun shows...
The quiz said NO.
Umm - If you buy a firearm from a dealer at a gunshow in Tennessee, a background check is required. Just as if you were buying at his regular place of business. Anybody tells you different is either dumb as a post or is setting you up for a BATFE sting. Your quiz could get someone in serious legal difficulty.
If you buy a firearm from another patron (one who is not a dealer), it doesn't matter if you are at a gunshow or not. A transaction with a private individual who lives in Tennessee is legal (unless you are a 'prohibited' person - ie a felon, mental patient, non-citizen, draft dodger, straw purchaser, or have fallen afoul of the lautenberg amendment). A transaction with someone who isn't a Tennessee resident is a violation of federal law.
Any non-dealer who goes to a gunshow with a quantity of guns and tries to sell them is very, very liable to get arrested for unlicensed dealing - being 'in the business' of selling firearms. Any dealer is gonna run the background check. So why the incorrect answer on the quiz?

Regards

Tennessee resident

Colorado.

Q: Are background checks required on 'private' gun sales?
A: Yes

thats wrong ... no background check required on gun sales between private indiviuals in the state of Colorado.

In the FAQ they also say there is a 10 day waiting period for any gun purchase, this is also wrong (although they got that one right in the quiz).

Conclusion: About.com don't know jack. :neener:

I got a 90%on the CT quiz. I got the registration question wrong, since I answered no. It is possible to have a long gun that the police do not know you have, if you purchase it in a private sale. No DPS-3 is sent in on those transactions. I selected yes on waiting period, but you only do a 14 day wait if you are buying a long gun, and don't have a pistol permit or hunting license. ASnd the only background check involved with private sales are for handguns.

What is About.com???

The most uselessly annoying website designed, it would seem, to specifically clutter up my search engine requests.

thats wrong ... no background check required on gun sales between private indiviuals in the state of Colorado.

They're required for any firearms transfer conducted at a gun show. It doesn't matter if they're a private seller or an FFL.

Even for 2001, it's wrong. For example, Arizona does not require a permit to carry a hangun, and as far as I know, never has. Heck, we're an open carry state both in theory and in reality.

about.com looks like a waste of bandwidth.

(Edited to add): Looks like the quiz has the right answer about handgun permits for AZ; the reference page has the wrong answer.

Q. What are the Gun Laws in Maryland?

Handguns

Permit to carry handguns? Yes.

Anyone care to share a laugh with me?

That's about the best I could do for ya' my friend!

Technically speaking, the quiz would be correct. MD does issue permits to carry about as often as Osama flies to the U.S. and dines with the board of directors at the NRA.
