The only reason agencies are switching is because S&W will give them brand new M&P's for their used Glock's, Straight up trades.
You think Glock didn't do this, and still doesn't do this? How did Glock become the most issued LE firearm in the US, almost overnight?

Back to the OP,

You wont go wrong with either pistol. Weigh your trigger time with the G19, holsters, spare mags, mag pouches, etc against how much you like the M&P. I personally like the M&Ps better (they're far more comfortable / have a natural fit to my hand), but I also like consistent training. Write down the pros and cons to each, and decide that way. Alternately, if this purchase is something you can easily afford with your financial situation, there's nothing wrong with buying the M&P for no other reason than you like it and want one.

Option 1: Buy the Glock 19 so you'll have two.

Advantages:

1) Common gear -- you don't need to buy too much extra stuff.
2) Magazines are the same. Share with your wife if there's a situation.
3) Parts are very easy to acquire and low cost.
4) Glocks are simple to work on. Most people can do 90% of the work required to fix the gun.
5) Training: you're already familiar with the gun (not that they're much different). Your wife also knows it.
6) Very reliable self-defense oriented handgun.

Disadvantages:

I can't think of any.

Option 2: Buy the M&P

Advantages:

1) Possible improvement in shooting--better recoil handling, etc
2) Apex Tactical parts make the trigger very nice
3) Is there a sale?
4) Very reliable self-defense oriented handgun.

Disadvantages:

1) New gun; must be proven.
2) Training: need to familiarize yourself with it before using it for self-defense.
3) Gear: you'll need to order new stuff and wait for it.
4) Mags: different and cost may be more.

Maybe you can munge them together to make a Plock.

I own a Glock 19 as well. I was looking hard at getting the S&W M&P9c also. The one thing that swayed me away from it (and most sub compacts also) is that my pinkey finger gets in the way during mag changes. The Glock 19 is just large enough to keep all the fingers on the grip where they belong. I haven't had any problems with concealment either. If you can't rent one at a local range then you are faced with the decision of taking a gamble on the M&P or going with the familiar Glock. One thing to note though is that if you don't go with the M&P you will always wonder about it down the road. My $0.02 would be to get the M&P and give it a try. As others have said you can always trade it for a Glock 19 (there are plenty of them out there).

Both are Excellent Guns!

Like the other Poster's have said. Make sure you get the one that fits your hand the Best and you shoot the Best with! I personally like the MP. I still own two of them. Ergonomics are Great. I cannot get used to the feel/angle of a Glock, but that does not make them an inferior gun. Glock's are built Very Well. Do not forget to go see a Psychiatrist for the Voices in your Head:what::neener:

PS: jonboynumba1 Posted after me. BUT-That is a Great Idea! If you can afford it, get Both-You could even get different Calibers if you want---Have a Great Day Everyone!

Both are excellent designs. I was very close to getting an M&P 9 pro a month ago, but I didn't because of the time and money it would take to outfit it and train with it. My glocks would be jealous too.

I am biased though. Glock offers me more than the M&Ps can. The M&P is still a good pistol, but I will stick to my Glocks.

I went with an M&P .40.

not as easy to find parts as the Glock, but it was purely a grip comfort thing.

I'll be picking up the .357 Sig barrel, and the 9mm barrel (and Mags, .357 sig feeds in the .40's) giving me economy, and defense in one frame.

Thankfully we live in an age where ones personal preference still results in a generally reliable gun.

simple answer

you obviously should buy both! Assuming she likes the 19. The M&P feels great...the design is more complicated and waky than the glock...the glock is a cleaner simpler machine...I have 2 XD9's that feel GREAT and have been 100% for my wife and I (big and small hands) they feel more ergoniomic than glock....she LOVES hers...I like mine a lot (for a nine it's about as nice as it gets in plastic) That said today at work a a LOT I'm toting a GLOCK 21 SF because at the end of the day I just trust glocks more....I've owned MANY and shot THOUSANDS of rounds through em....to spite internet tales of kabooms and failures I've never had any problems...I bought a XD45 first before the SF...it shot GREAT felt great....finally had some issues...springfield would have made it right...but I dumped it and went back to GLOCK....no problems! an enduring trend in my life....GLOCK= no problems...they just work.

FWIW I've had excellent support from GLOCK and Springfield Armory....S&W has pissed me off more times than I can count...they just aren't good at handling problems...back in the day they used to be a VERY different company...today however their service blows. And they did offer an insane trade to the local university PD for their G23's as mentioned above...the majority of the department said they didn't want a free or nearly free new gun...they wanted their 23's! I suspect it was because they have a LEO training center there and it would be good for their image to say that's what the staff there uses...the guy that ran the school wanted to swap! the rank and file said -nope! more LE professionals carry GLOCK than probably all other brands combined....some of that is cost (vs. sig/HK ect) some of that is simple brand loyalty because they work and they are lighter on the belt than many of the older favorites they dethrowned.

In a perfect world we'd all get a free 1911 with every glock we buy! ;)

I am not a Glock fan, But in your case I think i would get another G19. I think it is advantageous to be able to share mags for SHTF scenarios. God forbit should they ever arise. Plus you can buy a ton of mags and rationalize it to the wife ;->

I like the Plock idea but I would call mine a Mock.

The M&P is reliable, has interchangable barrels if you start with the 40 or .357Sig and has every aftermarket part needed for an SD/HD/Comp pistol. Glocks are easier to work on but a detail strip of an M&P still takes minutes with a hammer and punch.

4 mags to start with gives you 61 rounds if the SHTF. If that isn't enough, you didn't bring enough gun.

Best of luck (you're buying a new pistol, whose luckier than you anyway), hope you find one that makes you happy.

PS. I've never cared for Glock triggers nor did I care for my M&P triggers out of the box. You may feel differently but you might want to budget for Apex parts or an hour to stone the factory sear and smooth out the striker block.

I am going to throw the Sprinfield XD-M into the Fray!

I own Full size SW-MP 9mm, Great Gun I will always keep it. But I also own TWO XD-M 9mm's. [Also and XD-M .40 and Now on order .45] They are a Step up. The 9mm holds 19 in the Mag and they have the Match Grade Barrel. Ergonomics are also Awesome. The XD-M shoots a little better to me.I am a little more accurate with the XD-M. I like the feel of the XD-M. It is large and feels like a Combat/Defensive 9mm -which is what it was made for:evil: Go Try one out.:) Remember that is the XD-M not the regular XD.

Thanks for all the replies!

went by a gun shop today to handle some, this time i had them pull out a g19, g19rft2 with scallops(i love the looks) , and a mp9....oh and a gen4 17.

And though its a little awkward, i handled them for 10 min or so going back and forth

gen 17 was nice, i liked it bare in the "sf" mode. but i like a bit smaller of a gun,
i absolutley loved the rtf g19! something about the rtf made the glock feel SO much better, as if it was actually smaller, though i dont think it really is. but it just sticks and i loved it,
after the rtf i didnt like the m&p as much as last time, though i still like em. so i weighed all that had been said here(great points and views) and (borrowed pic)

absolutely love it

Sweet!

Now you can blow stuff up together with matching guns! that is if you're a plinker. If you're more the paper punching type you can do that.

Same as mine, except mine has straight serrations. (thank goodness) :uhoh:

Congratulations, it's a new baby Glock! Fine choice and I might add the first scalloped one I've seen.

Glock 19

The voices in your head served you well, good choice.
You have avoided buyers remorse.

:) yeah, i figured some would like em and some wouldnt. I do right now. i changed my other 19 over to the rtf2 frame just to look at it with straight serrations and its good as well.

To this day I've never held a more comfortable gun than the M&P.

they are nice, but felt slick after handling the rtf2 for a while, if i ever get a 45 (just because) i may look at the mp45c....

Yes. So, even though I am a Glock fan, I bought both (M&P 40 keeps G22 company).

Now, I don't hear voices in my head, just have warm and fuzzy feelings all over. :D

shot her yesterday couple hundered rounds no ftf etc....love it! i was really accurate with it! as far as the scalloped slide, it actually does Work better, your fingers really dig in....

I did good

you've inspired me...I just bought a GLOCK 23 to go with my 21 SF for weekly carry at the shop. I think of it as a "mini 21"

(though I carry 230gr gold dots (double tap loaded) in the .45 and 135gr corbon or DT in .40...so ammo wise I go the opposite end of the weight spectrum between .40 and .45)

but the both carry 13+1 of a good round that starts with a "4" and they are both GLOCK...
