Just got back from Academy buying ammo. Something must have happened. The gun racks were as full as you could get them and the shelfs were so full of guns you could hardly see what you were looking at. The ammo shelf had been moved and was twice the size and full.

Most the times if the shelf is empty its because they have stocked for the day. They haev plenty of stock in the back. They arent like walmart and what you see is what you get.

They just wont go to the back and get it. I have been in there and watched people clear the shelf "thinking they are getting it all" and asked if they had "insert caliber" here and was told to come back in a few hours and they would restock it. So I finally asked when I came back if the truck had just come in or what. Was told nope, they just didnt have time to restock right away and they had more in the back basically.

There has been way too much panic buying lately though. Sigh.

The last time I hit my Academy they were moving the ammo from behind the counter out to a main aisle. It was nice to have more space and easier to browse, but they didn't have any of the stuff I was looking for.

At the Academy in El Paso's lower valley they keep the rifle ammunition out in the main isle by the shotgun ammo. The handgun and most rimfire stay behind the counter. Usually do a good job of keeping everything stocked but the cheap AK and AR food.

My academy used to keep it behind the counter but they have moved it to a big isle now also. That helps a lot when you have 5 people waiting to look at guns and one person behind the counter. I will be using them more now. They also had some good prices on bulk ammo. If they had a real gun person in charge of the gun sales they could prob double their sales.

Is Academy somehow related to the "Academy Surplus Sales" in Texas in the 1960's? I bought my first two guns, a Carcano and a Lee-Enfield Mk. III, from them in Austin in 1961-62. The Carcano was $9.99 and the SMLE all of $12.99.

Yes, they are the same.
When I moved to Houston in 1988, Academy's were still tiny little stores and still carried military surplus stuff. I think they began opening/converting their stores to the massive Academy Sports & Outdoors stores around 1989 or '90.
