What distance do you guys target shoot from using 400-480fps muzzle velocity air handguns? I'm asking about the typical length barrels on revolver and semis. How far out before you start to notice significant drop or a lot of fliers? I started shooting at 50-60ft. before I started reading some folks target shot their air pistols from 15-20ft. When I brought my targets in to 30ft my accuracy was hugely increased. I realize that pellets will probably remain accurate from further out due to the rifled barrel as opposed to smoothed barreled bb guns.

Unfortunately my S&W M&P 40 (made by Umarex) non-blowback CO2 4.25" smoothbore barrel BB pistol lacks an adjustable rear sight, so that limits my 'minute of coke can' range to ~20 yards max before I run out of Kentucky windage. It would be good for further, given that it makes ~475 fps MV if not for the sights. My mrodair CP-1M .177 pistol is good for 30 yards offhand no problem and further if rested. Now that I have the CP2 carbine stock on it, plinking at 30 yards is almost boring.

I have no experience with them, but Tim McMurray of MAC1Air can turn a Crosman MK1 can be turned into a long range shooter- 1" at 50 yard. It's called the MK1LD.

My small collection* of BB and pellet repeating CO2 handguns that resemble actual firearms are only accurate for 5 to 10 yards. Excluding the one self-cocking blowback gun, they are mostly good for practicing close up double action only shooting.

*Pellet: Gamo PT80. BB: Gamo V3, Walther PPK, Desert Eagle, Makarov (the most accurate of all of them).

FWIW, the Daisy 499, aka "the world's most accurate BB gun", is designed for 5m target shooting, and as such will stack BBs into a single hole with almost boring regularity. But the 499 with just a spring swapped into it from the current production Red Ryder transforms the 499 from a 240 fps 5m gun into a 420-plus fps uber accurate BB gun that's easily capable of hitting targets at 30 yards.

Thanks for the replies. I recently bought my first entry level CO2 bb gun, a $28 Crosman P-10. I wasn't sure what I should expect from it. It's pretty good from 33ft. and given what it is, I'm satisfied with it. Considering moving up before long.

Any ideas on what direction you're going to go- like another CO2 pistol or rifle, or ? One thing's for sure- right now is a great time to be an airgunner. There are new releases almost weekly, in most cases prices are very reasonable and overall the quality is very good- even with affordable imported guns like those from SPA.

I've got a lot to learn about air guns. Last week I picked up a Crosman SNR since I like revolvers and it functions like a regular revolver with the swing out cylinder/release and the way you load it. It's all metal and the finish is surprisingly good. If these guns eliminate a couple of trips to the range they pay for themselves. What's the muzzle velocity range with the CO2 handguns? The cheap P-10 I have states 480fps max and the 357 SNR states 400fps w/bbs. I get a kick out of them both especially to snubbie. The accuracy seems to be pretty close w/bbs.

Other than the Umarex/S&W 40 I mentioned earlier, I don't have any real experience w/the action airguns, so I'm not in a position to comment on them other than what I've read here and there.

The CO2 guns I have vary quite a bit in MV, though. All are .177. The fastest is my Crosman 2400KT, but to call it a pistol is quite a stretch even though I have used it occasionally w/pistol grips. The barrel is 18", so most of the time I use the carbine stock and shoot it as a rifle. Before any modifications it had a MV of ~ 660 fps w/Crosman Premier HP 7.9 gr pellets. Another CO2 pistol I have actually is a pistol, it's a SPA CP-1M and it does about 480 fps using the same pellet. My QB78 (CO2 rifle) does around 600 fps w/no mods using the same pellet. Then there's my tin can plinker, a Daisy 74 smoothbore BB 'rifle'. Low powered but gets a LOT of shots per cartridge- like ~ 200 @ around 350 fps.

Hopefully there will be someone along who can fill you in on the "life-like" guns out there. There are a lot of them and like you've found- many are VERY realistic. In the meantime, your best bet is to keep searching and reading.

I have a Feinwerkbau CO2 match pistol, caliber .177. Pellets...acquired before the switch to HP air. It is not what is being discussed here but as far as accuracy goes, it provides a reference point.
It came with a test target shot on an 10 meter international bullseye target. The ten ring on thst target is .177” in diameter. The test target has a single hole in the ten ring through which five shots have passed.
Air pistol is one of only three pistol events in the modern Olympics (the others are Rapid fire pistol and Precision (“Free”) pistol). Air pistol is a game of tens. The current world record for a 60 shot match is 594/600 - basically 54 tens and six nines.
