ME! One more person who has realized that the safety of my wife and myself is no one's responsiblity but my own.

I just purchased my very first handgun this afternoon... a Kel-Tec PF-9! :D I have been saving the cash, and reading THR for a few months now in preparation for this glorious day, and it finally arrived! I know it's just a humble KT, nothing fancy... but as far as I'm concerned it's the greatest gun in the world.

I have to thank those who contribute their collective wisdom to THR, it has been indespensable to my education thus far, and I'm sure will continue to be.

The only thing left is the CHL, but I hope to have that soon. Then it's off for some more training of course.

Thanks for letting me celebrate!

Now get a darn good holster to carry the gun in--don't skimp as an expensive, well built holster is more comfortable and safer than a cheap one. Congrats!

The training will be the big deal. You need it, badly, especially with a small gun . . . but you'll be surprised how much fun it is.

Good on ya!

a new child needs alot of food so make sure you put a good amount of ammo through so you get used to it.

Congrats and welcome to the 'ranks'...+ 1 on the training with the small gun, thats very important, learn state laws regarding firearms...self defense but most of all,be sure to 'get some training/practice'.

:)

Congrats sir. Hope it is the first of many and that you catch the "bug" of gun collecting. I don't have it--just because I bought three this week--really I don't--shaking nervously---Nooooo, maybe I do.
Practice till your gun fits naturally into your hand/holster/and life style. wc

I was thinking that next on my list would be the NRA's classes in both home defense and personal defense. Any other suggestions for good classes or training, particularly in the Portland area? IDPA, or something along those lines maybe? How does one get into that?

congrats as well

it's only a 9mm, but it is a very light gun, be prepared for a bit of kick. Consider wearing thin gloves in case you have an issue with slide bite.

Congrats! We're in the same boat, man. I too just bought my first handgun and am taking my CPL class in two weeks. Good luck and shoot a lot, it helps!

Welcome j_charles! Congrats on your new purchase. Go out, buy yourself a couple boxes of defensive ammo (see which one you like the best for reliability and accuracy), and run them through your gun. Practice regularly, and have fun!

Congrats! You are so right the responsibility of protecting your family is on you. Get your wife involved and a gun of her own and you both get the training.

Congratulations. The journey begins, but is never finished. The pistol you bought is a hardy little beast, you will get many years of great service from it. Keep it clean and get it broken in ASAP. You might even think about an inexpensive reloading setup to help conserve funds to feed it. Ditto on the good quality holster for carry. Leather is your friend! Practice carry around the house until the license arrives. Get comfortable drawing and holstering, the tactical classes for concealed carry are great. I have been a handgun owner/carry for many years, and just recently took a tactical class. They are not only very informative, they are FUN.

This won't be your last purchase. Better start saving.
Is there a Guns Anonymous group for people like me that can't stop buying firearms?

Welcome, and congrats on seeing the light and converting from sheep to sheperd!!! We need many more of your type . . spread the word with family and friends :D

As the others have said, enroll for a safety training course, and run many, many boxes of ammo through her.

Congrats--enjoy and be safe
I got my first handgun about 4 years ago--a Kel Tec P11 ( a great little gun)
But be careful--about a year ago I had to get one of those big honkin' safes to hold all of the additions--:D
