If you were going to add iron/open sights to your firle, 30-06 or 308. Which would you add and why.

I have a Remington 783 and I want to add sights to it to shoot without a scope.

Williams, cause they are sitting on my bench.....

Otherwise id try find a banded front sight that fit, and an peep of some sort https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1...sight-weaver-style-base-adjustable-steel-blue or again something similar like the XS sight. Reason being is you can attach a band front sight with a set screw and no smithing, otherwise your sights will probably cost 1/2 as much as your rifle unless you can do it yourself.

^ yup.

NEGC or Williams, depending upon budget. Tacky D&T bolt on’s aren’t my favorite, but they work.

It would be possible to have some basic iron sights installed for about what a decent scope costs. But I'd much rather just spend the money on a better scope. I've been hunting and shooting for over 40 years. I've never had a scope let me down, nor found a situation where a scope wasn't a much better option. I've had iron sights let me down twice. My advice is to buy good optics and forget about it.

Speaking personally, I find it infuriating that a manufacturer of a precision instrument like a hunting rifle can ship it out lacking what I consider a major component. That said, if and when I buy my next bolt, if it doesn't come with them installed, I'll pay extra to have it right. And you bet I'll be sending that company a neatly-typed and oddly-worded letter letting them know just how I feel about it.

I bought an old sporterized Swede carbine years ago that had a Williams peep sight on it. It worked great until I added a scope.

If they were backup, then some kind of leaf so that I could run a scope as primary. If the irons are to be primary, then I would get an aperture, maybe a ladder.

I'm a big fan of a rear apature sight I have on my 270 a talley brand rear base which is the rear base and apature sight in one when I get home from work I will take a picture of it , brockman also makes a similar product I don't own the brockman but I plan on my next rifle build the talley can be difficult to locate . On my rifle it also allows me to use medium ringswith Leupold 3.5-10 and keep a nice check weld using the irons or optics but that also depends on your stock and optics objective diameter and possible inference of power adjustment ring and the peep sight

How's your stock's drop in the comb? Some stocks with more drop are suited to using irons. Others, with a flatter comb, are better suited to use optics. While you want a good cheek weld, you don't want to be so far down on the comb such as the latter that it busts your cheekbone every time you light it while looking through the sights. I learned that one from experience with a .30-06.

The above having been said, if Williams makes an aperture sight to fit a Remington 783, it'll probably save you a few dollars not going with Lyman's new production aluminum sights.

For the front sight, LoonWulf has a point and you can find banded front sights on eBay listed as Lyman and Redfield. I haven't checked MidwayUSA for new production.
