I hear so much conflicting stories about this question.... Years ago I bought an AK with a thumbhole stock, can I replace the thumbhole stock with a regular stock w/o being in any violation of law ? Also I would like to free the weld on a folding metal stock, is that legal ? How about adding the flash suppressor with attached bayonet lug to a Century build FAL ? Since I've bought these rifles a few years back, I see them coming from distributors with these added devices already equipped now . How does the laws affect what I'm proposing to do ? Any of your help would be appreciated, clearly I don't want any jail time or fines coming my way...............And today being December 25 ,
Merry Christmas !

What state are you in?

Knowing that is huuuge.

Some states the answer will be an easy NO to some of the questions. That, I can tell you.

As already noted, state laws differ . . . and within some states, there are local laws (city, county) which also apply.

As far as the Feds are concerned, section 922(r) is most often cited for compliance. Here's one commercial site that discusses it: http://www.tapco.com/section922r/

There are other sites that turn up on Google. Briefly, a rifle has to have a bunch of US-made parts for it to be legal in "evil" configuration. The actual parts required vary by rifle.

danez71.................. I'm in PA.....The land of taxes !

Sam1911 is Mod here and from central PA. He'll know. If he doesn't show up here then maybe send him a message pointing him to this thread. Very helpful and knowledgeable.

There's some others too that seem pretty knowledgeable as well.

Hi! There's nothing at all about PA law that would hang you up.

What you're looking for is "922(r)" compliance.

The link to Tapco's site that HankB gave above is a good explanation.

Sad to say I still need a good, straight explanation . Would the Fed allow me to replace a thumbhole stock with an American Stock ? Grind off the weld on a metal folding stock ? Exchange a thumbhole stock for a foreign stock ? Add an original flash suppressor and bayonet lug to a barrell ? I don't mean to cause any grief, but I just want each of my intentions spelled out with straight language, not confusing to me with legalese . Please somebody answer this straight up for me ?

I don't think you're understanding that there is no straightforward and simple answer; 922(r) is fairly complicated. Yes, you can do all those things, but it would require also changing certain other parts out with US-made parts. The link in post # 3 breaks it down very well: http://www.tapco.com/section922r/

I am not a lawyer, so this is NOT legal advice, but if I were contemplating what you are, I would look at the link I provided in Post #3, and down near the bottom see that there are 16 "regulated" parts in the AK.

In order to make the mods you're contemplating, any six of those listed regulated parts would have to be replaced with "Made in USA" parts. (Note that an "original flash suppressor" would probably not count, UNLESS it was a "Made in USA" reproduction.)

Three of the parts are the magazine floorplate, follower, and body. These are trivially easy - just use a completely "Made in USA" magazine . . . but I personally wouldn't really feel comfortable with a rifle that would be in violation of the law if I used the wrong magazine.

Install 6 other "Made in USA" parts from the list of regulated parts, and you should be good to go.

Thank you both for your input. Yes indeed it is complicated, but adding American parts to the correct mix seems to be the answer . That's the way I'll go, basically doing the things I want but using American made parts to offset what I want to do. Thank you all very much !
