Adult .22 long rifle caliber Rifle desired...

I don't know what you have but the 541 is an adult sized rifle.
I suppose one could call it that. The bolt handle is rather short and it's less than convenient to use rapidly. Plus, the barrel is exceedingly small in diameter and looks like it was just 'stuck there'. The over all look is kiddish, to me if to no one else. I'm ready for something better.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. More fully;

1. I have a Marlin 39. Not 39A, but 39. It was owned by my late father and purchased by him "...when they first came out..." The serial number on the rifle shows it was made in the first year of manufacture. 1922, according to my late father. It is going to my oldest (only, so far) grandson. I want a bolt gun and my eyes never have liked buckhorn sights; less so with age.

2. I decided against the Ruger because I want a wood stock and when this 'episode' began, all there were of the Ruger American had synthetic stocks. Now, according to the website, they have a wood stock. (Perhaps they've been around for a long time; I haven't seen any sign of such until lately.) If I get stumped on the CZ, I may see about the Ruger. I like Ruger.

3. I might be interested in a used rifle, but only if it is set up for a scope, is blue (or looks close enough for those of us who care), has a proper designed slim wooden stock without logos or model names (I like the look of the CZ Royal except for the hideous carving on the side.)

We have a gun show in March. I'll be looking around for one, but I'm not going to settle for what someone has. It's my fantasy and my hard earned filthy lucre.

Nothing "kiddish" about the 541. They all have 24" barrels and full sized stocks. The action is scaled to the cartridge. The 541 and its brethren are considered some of the finest domestic rimfire rifles of the 20th century. Short of one of the 700 derivatives, I don't know what wouldn't be considered "kiddish".

Honest question......

what would be a step up from a CZ? Obviously Anschutz. Anything else?

Current production, CZ is tough to beat. Old school? A few, like Winchester, Remington and this off the beaten path Weatherby MK XXII. This one was made in Italy for Weatherby.

I love to shoot rimfires and would suggests, as others have, CZ (I have a 452 Trainer and a 455 LUX, both great rifles using irons), a nice Marlin 39A Mountie (a bit on the small side for me, but I am fairly large) and Ruger 77/Series (standard blue/wood and a VBZ). All of these are very nice rifles and I have put lots of rounds through them with zero problems.

Recently I have begun to shoot Ruger American Rimfires. They do not feel the same as the above mentioned guns, but for a truck gun or a hiking gun they are great. They are light, accurate, and use a familiar magazine. My triggers are good right out of the box and accuracy has been stellar.

I really want to give the Tikka a try, but have not been able to find one locally to check out. Hopefully at some point in the future this madness will die down and gun shopping will return to normal.

I have a model 17VS that is identical except in 17HMR. A buddy has a model 25M like you. Both are tack drivers and definitely adult sized.

I have an early issue Marlin 917VS, 17HMR and it is likely the most accurate rifle I own and possibly ever seen. I did the trigger kit and a one piece scope mount. It is a shooter. It needs a better scope still.

And they get real pi---y when a Savage Mk II is just as accurate.
I've been there a lot but don't recall them getting pi--y when someone said that some of the Savages are just as accurate. Mostly I've seen a lot of respect for the accuracy of some of the Savage guns, rimfire and centerfire. What I've seen them say boils down to the fact that, to a lot of people, that there's more to the enjoyment of operating a gun than just the accuracy. Accuracy is the base requirement, but what tends to make people buy more than one CZ is that a lot of people just connect with the guns and enjoy operating them. There are lots of people on the CZ forums on RFC that also have multiple Anschutzs and Winchester 52s, may have a Voodoo, Volquartsen, Bergara, and/or other nice guns, but a lot of them seem to spend more time with their CZs.

Even an old Savage Click/Clack Gill gun can be very accurate as well as fun to shoot.

Are you about to? Because some people enjoy operating and tuning and improving Savage and Marlin and Ruger products as much as you may operating your CZ.

I have a fairly new CZ that I haven’t yet fully given a chance but if your 541 is a shooter, like most of them were, I’d put the money into making it look like you want it to and putting whatever bolt handle on it that’s not “dinky” to you.

Out of the box the 77/22 feels better than the CZ, too bad they don’t shoot as good as they look and feel.

What 541 do you have?

Hard to go wrong with a 39a. Always wanted a CZ and never got around to it. Taking my 39a squirrel hunting tomorrow.

Whatever you do, don’t go to www.rimfire central.com.

Those folks will convince you that you don’t need a CZ rimfire rifle. You need at least three. To start.
They are to blame for me buying both of my CZ's.................... Both in .22LR and both more accurate than me.

Bill

My 455 FS and 457 American two tone stubby stainless.
