Adult Single Shot .22?

Mine's a Win 1885 Low Wall Repo by Ballard Rifle and cartridge, my pictures really don't do it justice:

For those that were into black powder cartridge silhouette, it's got Steve Garbe's initials on the barrel. 30" Douglass air-gauged barrel, DSTs, Exhibition grade wood, MVA scheutzen soule rear sight, standard front sight, and schuetzen helm lever.

I had it built to mirror my 1885 high-wall silhouette rifle for practice.

Walther, Anschutz, Remington, Winchester, TC, Savage and many other examples exist.

The old 510’s are dirt cheap and “adult sized”. I was going to cut the barrel down for a younger shooter on this $35 510 I picked up at an estate sale, just couldn’t do it after I refinished the stock and built a 16” barrel for a contender, even with a suppressor it’s ~ 6 inches shorter but still perfect for a big boy to play with.

If weight makes one better for adults than children, you might look for an old Savage 24, they are he heaviest single shot .22’s I have.

Santa brought this to me XMas 1949. It’s a Remington 514 .22 single shot. I had it professionally bead blasted and re-blued a few years ago, I refinished the stock which is a beautiful piece of walnut. The thing is ridiculously accurate with irons. While setting with it on my porch a few days ago I noticed a lone leaf close to my neighbor’s driveway some 60-70 yards away. When I pulled the trigger the leaf disappeared. I love the rifle and would never sell it. It’s simple but outstanding at what it does. DSC02204-zps3ec8f830.jpg

With the insane prices of ammunition right now, including .22 rimfire, I’ve been thinking a single shot ADULT SIZE rifle might be really fun to conserve ammos and work on fundamentals.

But 99.9% of them seem to be made for children.

I’d prefer new just because I don’t want to deal with finding parts if an antique breaks on me, but I’d anyone can recommend a DURABLE AND TOUGH used variant that isn’t terribly expensive or rare that could do.

Ideas?
CZ 457 if you can spend around $500 for a bolt action rifle. Even if it’s magazine fed, you should be able to shoot well with any bolt action 22. Semi auto rifles do tend to gulp ammo because most shooters simply can’t contain themselves. That’s one reason why I prefer shooting revolvers to semi auto pistols. It forces the shooter to slow down.
In these inflationary days, I don’t see spending $6 for a box of 50 22 LR being that bad. Norma ammo isn’t too bad. CCI minimags run about $12 per 100, or $6.50 per 50 which again isn’t too bad. Now stepping up to Lapua Center X match at over $20 per box of 50 is painful for rimfire.
If I were you, I’d purchase a CZ 527. They have sweet triggers out of the box.
Two bits.....

Contender carbine would have been the answer for the last couple decades but when S&W killed production the prices went wild.

My suggestion is a mag fed bolt rifle. Anything made by CZ should be satisfactory

I gots three, but they are all out of print options: H&R Sportster, Henry Mini-Bolt with adult stock, and Remington 580 (shown beside Swiss Vetterli Cadet)

If old and funky appeals, consider the Husqvarna .22 single shot rifles:

Simpsons carries a bunch of these: https://simpsonltd.com/long-guns/husqvarna/husqvarna-22-single-shot-rifles/

I like old and funky stuff as well. For no rational reason I want a Winchester thumb trigger:

It is on my list of things to pick up for sure!

50's Romanian Cugir-UMC ss target rifles are very nice and set up for Adult use. Some may be found with excllent bores and are very accurate.. We have relined some and they shoot even better.

Anytime a rimfire thread is started I always give a shameless plug for Anschutz. Wonderful rifles with man in mind. No ridiculous gimmicks or cheap plastic. Prices are all over for them but one that seems to be universally tolerable money wise is the ED super. With that incredible 54 action. 20220422_184156.jpg

Another vote for the Savage MkI. Though the MkI is hard to find in stock right now. Or you could watch for an older Savage/Stevens/Springfield Model 15/120/125 single shot bolt action. These are quite common and usually fairly inexpensive. I know my Springfield Model 120 and my dad's Savage Model 15 are very accurate rifles.

Very nice. It is nice to see the gun is still in production. I see that the I G model is the adults sizes variant. But the comb looks set up for a scope:

Are the irons still usable or do you have to smash your head down to see the sights?

Edit: I see Tech Sights makes a sight that should fit:

Looks like it puts the sights higher.

I'm going to blame this on @JCooperfan1911 if I get caught but I stopped at a small gun store on the way home and they had a ton of new stuff that came in from a estate. Lots of the stuff looked new or unfired. Amongst the rifles they had a Savage MKII GY. It's a single shot semi-youth rifle with a 19 inch barrel and a 20 inch LOP. It is very handy and trim. Since I was the only person to ask about the rifle this week we made a deal for $135. Now my 10 day wait begins. I am not sure I needed another .22 but I have never owned a Savage so it will be interesting to check this one out.

Edit to add: It looks like JC is on the same path.

Very cool ECVMatt, let us know how you like it.

I have a Remington 540XR. It is a single shot target rifle. They are fairly common and pretty reliable. And very accurate.View attachment 1073990View attachment 1073991
That target is at 50 yards. Most of them are around $500.or these days a little more. It is Definity full size. A lot more fun and accurate than a lightweight sporter.

not sure where you commonly find remington 540x's in .22lr for 500.00 ... I havent seen them that sheap for many many years unless beat up oretty good...have been offered over a grand for mine a few times...and that was before all this crap.... kimber 82's seem to g 800 or so is about the cheapest full size .22 target gun around
