I was given an old Browning Auto-5 in 16ga not long ago and I am trying to find out how old it might be. Its serial # is 112xxx and it has the old style safety in the front of the trigger guard.

I saw this quote on the Browning website:

"Beginning with Serial Number 1 to approximately 228,000. Exact production figures are not available. Year of manufacture on Pre-World War II production is strictly a guess."

I am hoping someone has a good educated guess as to when this Auto-5 was made.

Thanks for looking and thanks for any help and leads.

From the serial number guide I have it should be 1938. The chart browning has on their website is very general and does not contain all the serial number information as the auto 5s were serialized differently for the different gauges. For example my 53 16 ga starts with an X. If you pm me with your email I can send you a pdf of the reference.
