    Hey,

So I was talking with my friend about the smell given off when plinking and whatnot with various kinds of ammunition. I swear when I shoot the Aguila Super Extra .22lr I smell a strong citrus smell. My friend says I'm losing my marbles. He says it smells just like regular gunpowder. My girlfriend says she smells a little bit of citrus but I think she might be humoring me.

Am I the only one who is instantly reminded of fresh squeezed OJ when firing Aguila Super Extra .22lr? Federal, Eley, Armscor, and Winchester all smell like proper gun powder but the Aguila stuff makes me hungry/thirsty.

Smells like glue to me. Like the extremely smelly, chemical glue that I imagine some people would try to get high on.

It does have a different, but not unpleasing smell to it. Not sure Id call it citrus though.

I use a lot of it it's inexpensive and easy to find and agree it smells different, wouldn't call it citrus. But it definitely doesn't smell the same as the federal or cci products.

It seems particularly acrid to me. Decent ammo, but I do not like the smell.

    How old is it?

Most of mine is fairly old and some is very accurate for the money. I got some more of the Standard velocity super extra because one rifle did particularly well with it but the new batch isn’t so great.

Then I noticed most of my stock is Eley prime and the new stuff is Aguila prime (bottom left).

One of my friends thinks it smells like soap. I'm not sure what it smells like honestly.

Not sure about age but it says Eley prime. I've used Eley Match and Eley something or other though and neither of them smelled like the Aguila.

    That's what I get.
Like the super-cheap commercial-grade antibacterial hand soap, or like you didn't rinse Dawn off the stove burners.

    High points for imaginative analogy.
I agree that Aguila .22 has a funny/ bad smell , but I’m not going to try to top Machina’s description.

Yes it is the same priming compound that Eley uses/makes. All of my older Remington/Eley 17m2 ammo smells the same. For the most part all of the Aquila Super Extra 38Gr HP and 40Gr RN ammo functions and shoots well out of all the 22lr guns I've use it in. I still find CCI ammo to be a little more accurate.

I've shot quite a few of the Aquila Sniper SubSonic stuff (SSS)
    135961.jpg
And I would describe it as summer time outside of the sewage reclamation site... it has a very unpleasant odor.
It's so stinky, I call that ammo Super S****y Smell (SSS). Other than that, it's good shooting reliable ammo. Maybe I just got a really bad batch. Like I said already, it shoots great except for the smell. I wish it smelled like oranges.

Im glad my sense of smell is not strong. I have some Aguila standard velocity. My LGS gave me a brick of the super when i bought my Ruger MK4. The ruger didn't like it. I used it in my rifles and revolvers.

Has anyone gotten the same smell as anyone else here? I wonder how many different smell descriptions we can come up with before thread lock!:D

Imagine Sean Connary saying "citrus", that's the only correlation to citrus in my opinion. I like the ammo, don't care for the smell. It's the gunpowder smell equivalent of ballistol.

Yes, Aguila has a weird odor when fired. I don’t have a descriptor other than “different.”

But any burnt gunpowder odor smells like Freedom to me ;).

    Stay safe.

I like to joke that Aguila Sniper SubSonic must use pure priming compound in that .22 Short case to give the 60 grain bullet a velocity over 900 feet per second. SSS smoke definitely has a unique aroma.

Aguila uses the priming method developed by Eley.
Changing the name Eley Prime to Aguila Prime might be a change in process or might just be a change in name to get away from the impression Eley primed the casings for Aguila.

I purchased two large boxes about a year ago and have been shooting it fairly often lately. Don't notice any hint of citrus when I'm shooting it.

I don't know about citrus, but I definitely get what you mean. It's got a tangy, acidic, sulphuric smell to it that is unique

I also smell a soapy smell when shooting it.
It’s funny, I don’t smell that soapy smell when shooting Agiuila Interceptor or the Super Extra standard velocity ammo. Just the high velocity Super Extra.
