One of my HD guns is a Mossberg 500- My wife can handle it OK, but the recoil with #4 Buck (my choice, no discussion requested or desired) is a bit "steep" for her.
Has anyone used these "short" shells and are they worth the effort? it looks like the "modification" needed to the mag well is cheap, easy, and easily reversible, but the ammo itself seems pricey (Not a consideration if that means the wife can run the gun better)
Any informed opinions welcome.

YES, have installed that 'adapter' to the Shockwave and its a hoot to shoot .

AND as mild a round as you have ever fired in a 12 bore [ actually milder than ANY that I have fired ].

AND you get to stuff a whole bunch of um in there.

Like at least 9 to 12 ,depending on the capacity.

I prefer the slug round, mild and more accurate in my not so humble opinion.

I hope they make that adapter for the 870 soon.

I like them, as well as similar shorty offerings, in my (duly registered) 11" SxS SBS. I could never get them to run completely reliably in a Mossberg 500-pattern gun. YMMV.

If recoil is concern, maybe look into standard length, but reduced recoil 00 buck? Just a thought.

I've never got the Aguila mini-shells to run reliably in The Mossberg 500, Mossberg 590, and Remington 870.
Was getting failure to feed stoppages in them.
I believe the Mossberg can be modified so that reliability is increased, but doing so prevents use of standard shotgun shells. The mods needs to be removed so that it can use standard shotgun shells.

I've got the Aguila mini-shells to run reliably in Winchester 1300 and Kel-Tec KSG.
Never had any stoppages/malfunctions when using them.

My 500 will feed them, but and it is a big but, I have to rack them in sharply, without the slightest hesitation.
They are fun, but not for HD

The "modification" mentioned in the OP#1 is the Minishell adaptor for the Mossberg 500 (easy to install, easy to remove).
It does make it possible to use the Aguilla Minishells in a Mossberg 500 reliably in repeater mode.
I suspect it would beat having to buy a .410 or 28ga for self-defense for a recoil sensitive family member.

I think the mini-shells would be great for low recoil practice. In an actual home defense situation, your wife won't notice the recoil.

I would recommend a 20 gauge gas operated semi auto loaded with 2 3/4" buckshot for this situation.

The OpSol mini clip adapter works well in my M590 Shockwave, but the ammo is hard to find right now due to so many people buying it for their shockwaves.

I would personally use low recoil buckshot and forget about the minishells, or better yet get the 20 gauge we talked about earlier.

The newest adapter that allows AND makes it VERY viable to use the shorty shells is too easy to remove.

IF you have a cause to [ ran out of shorty shells ].

Cost was 15.00 cash, and now she hold 10 slugs = WOW s'all I got to say.

Appreciate all the replies.
DC I didn't expect them too be less noisy - just looking for faster follow-up shots.
Buying a new gun (especially a shotgun dedicated to HD) is not in the cards.
She shot her daughter's Mossberg .410 Defender? and loved it, but the $ ain't there.
$15 for the adaptor and some scratch for the shells are.
