I recently found a great deal on a Truglo Triton 20mm red dot (50% off), which is an Aimpoint Micro clone. It has the exact same mounting holes and base design as the Aimpoint, so risers are interchangeable. The red dot came with a low riser, but they also offer a high riser ($20). My AR (M&P15 OR) has standard height sights (removable front on the gas block, Magpul flip-up on the rear) and I have really gotten used to a true co-witness with red dots, and want to keep it that way.

I took a chance and ordered Truglo's high riser. It turned out to be a 1/3 lower co-witness. Then I saw a riser on Botach's website called the KZ Aimpoint Micro FT mount. In the product description, it clearly says, "True Co-Witness For Perfect Alignment w/ All Fixed Iron Sights & Aftermarket Flip-Up Sights."

Took another chance and ordered it (found it for $40). Nope - another 1/3 lower co-witness riser. False advertising. I am returning both risers.

I've seen all sorts of risers from Aimpoint, American Defense and LaRue that claim true co-witness for the Aimpoint Micro, but they cost more than I paid for my red dot. And I've been burned twice now on risers claiming true co-witness.

Does anyone know of something that will fit my needs for under $50? This is a budget range gun, so I don't need top quality, otherwise I would have just sprung for an Eotech/Aimpoint/Trijicon.

If the American Defense AD-T1-10 ($90) is without a doubt a true co-witness riser for the Micro, I might consider it, if there aren't any other less expensive options. Anyone with experience with this riser?

Thanks!

Mods: If this should be in the accessories or some other forum, I apologize. It's somewhat AR-15 related, so I thought it would fit here. Please move if necessary.

1/3 lower co-witness is actually better, and the way to go. You need to come to that realization on your own though, through experience.

Would you say this for all red dots and holographics, or just the smaller 20mm units such as the Micro?

I had a Bushnell Trophy 30mm red dot on the AR forever, with QD rings that setup a true co-witness with my front sight. I moved it to another rifle, but I really liked the sight picture, especially when I could flip up the rear sight, and the dot's MOA would shrink down.

I can see that the 20mm has much less field of view to work with, though. I might give lower 1/3 a try, but so far, I don't like it.

At the end of the day....my recommendation is to "Always" use what works for "YOU" the best....no matter what other people say....including me. :D

However, you always get a better FOV for your red dot itself if you go with a 1/3 co-witness.

Well, just because others are claiming that lower-1/3 is "better", I'll chime in that I think true cowitness is better, and I prefer to do it with fixed iron sights. So there! :neener:

I rock a LaRue QD mount (LT-751) and it puts my Micro H-1 in absolute co-witness with the irons. I usually shoot with the irons flipped down anyway but I like the lower mount. I can see why most guys like the lower 1/3 co-witness. It seems like it would be much faster to get a good sight picture. With the lower mount you have to get a deeper cheek weld and hold your head a little bit lower.

I was able to find a used good condition one on ar15.com for $85 shipped. Dish out the extra coin, you won't be disappointed. They retail around $110 w/ the throw lever. I know that it is twice as much as your looking for but you'll never need another mount and eventually you will upgrade to an aimpoint ;).
