Every now and then you hear about some knucklehead who forgot he (or she) was carrying and was stopped trying to get through airport security.

Along the same lines, has anyone ever been "swabbed" by the TSA after spending time at this range? And might propellant residue set off alarm bells at security? I've never heard of this being an issue, but was curious to know if range time prior to flying might cause a problem.
 
before we fly i set aside range,work cloths and sneakers. than i mt the wifes hand bag--averags finding 3 spent brass...sometimes a live round and a magazine. same for me--check pockets and dble check all camera equipment and bags. on it goes till they start feeling us up----

im giving up on flying till i can do it like a congresscritter--limo to the airport and up the stairs to my private jet.
 
I was "swabbed" once at the Kansas City airport. I had never seen it done before. My carry on bag was my range bag (containing no firearms or ammo at the time) and was filthy, full of range grit. They tested it and gave it back with a smile. I guess they're only looking for something other than gunpowder residue.
 
My shoes were swabbed about 2 hours after a range trip and nothing was detected. I spoke to a friend of mine who is a TSA trainer to let him know how it did not work and was told that they do not check for either black powder or gun powder.

My case has been swabbed many times. It has gone to the range but they were satisfied it wasn't dangerous.
 
I was swabbed after I spent the morning cleaning guns. Every time I fly, I get pulled for "screening"...must be my good looks (tattoos, piercings):evil:

Nothing turned up on their scan but I could still smell the Hoppes on my fingers. Guess their machines don't care about gun solivents and such.
 
I got swabbed once after spreading nitrate fertilizer on the lawn. Fortunately I had a reasonable screener.

I got "swabbed" at LAS on my way home from spending 4 days at Front Sight. Straight from the range to the airport (time was tight). Right through, no problemo.

Oh ... I feel soooo much safer ...
 
I use my assault pack as a carry on when flying to and from military schools. I have cut C4 on it in the rain (for those of you who don't know, C4 turns to runny soup in the rain), used it as a rest for many thousands of rounds out of M16s and M14s to the point where it has large visible powder stains, and used it to transport pyrotechnics, explosives, and ammunition. The only wash it ever gets is a good rain.

The only issue I've ever had is when an x-ray screener found a spent piece of m118lr brass in a pocket, which wasn't even a issue after they verified it wasn't a live round. The funny thing is, that bag had been through airport security four times since the last time I fired .308 off it... kinda makes me feel that the billions spent on the TSA isn't worth it.
 
I worked on the detectors.
They do not detect gun powder.
Feel safer now?
It's all for show anyhow.
