I am thinking about getting an AK-47 kit and building the reciever myself. This idea poped into my head after I saw the templates you can get to make your own. akbuilder.com I think.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on where to get a quality kit. (price is a consideration)

Your thoughts on making the reciever and are some places better than others for getting the setup stuff.

General advice is welcome to as long as it doesn't hijack the thread.

Thanks

Might check kit prices before you go any further. Prices are pretty crazy, check Gun Broker for a few examples. Lot's of people buy the flat and bend their own receiver. You still have to spot weld the rails and install the center support, drill your rivet holes then have it heat treated. Probably leaving plenty out, I've only bought my receivers from NDS and had my kits built by some one else. Good luck on your project.

building an AR at home is easy... you just need basic hand tools... and a bench vise at most... but you don't even need that... an AK requires a LOT more... hydrolic press, and a lot more... hundreds of dollars of alot more equipment. it would only make sense to get all the equipment if you plan on building mulitiple AKs... I had Iron Clad Armory build an ak-74 for me.. they did an AWESOME JOB!
kits are expensive too... I got a Bulgarian kit and barrell from Atlantic for less than $300 before this nonsense... they are double that without a barrel or reciever now... good luck

Really good input from all. The tool up is not really a deterent for me as I want this to be a hobby, but as you all have said the AK's and AR's are just to much for now.

What would you recommend as another kit? Grease gun, PPS? If you have a recommendation, where could I get the template for the reciever? Who would you recommend I get the kit from?
