rbernie: Have people used a red dot on the imported brands of AKs in 7.62x39 with the side scope mount?

Some guys on YouTube exhibit groups of 2" or less at 100 yards with the types of sights which work well on some ARs. The posted results appear to dispel the myth of the "barn door" hearsay--normally based on lack of correct sighting in technique, skills with open sights, or use in select-fire.

dh1633pm: Lots of people out there seem to forget that the typical SKS has a bit of advantage with the longer sight distance, and possible better stability (than AKs?) when using an aperture mount such as Tech Sights (also for Marlin 60, Mini 14/30 etc)..

JDGray: most people seem to have no idea that AKs built by Century ( Not imported by them...) have components made from much lower-grade commercial steel than the steel used by foreign countries in their AKs, i.e. Romania, Russia's Saigas, China, Bulgaria, Serbia, true Polish.

I have used both magnified and unmagnified optics on my Saigas and other AK variants that had a siderail. The siderail works better for a reddot than a magnified optic, since the rail/mount don't leave much adjustability for eye relief. I actually preferred the Ultimak scout mount over the sidemount for a reddot; putting the optics weight further forward seemed to help the rifle balance better.

In general, though, the biggest issue with mounting optics on an AK is that the stock is set up for iron sights, and mounting an optic (using any sort of mount) will lose all cheekweld. I have converted one of my Saiga's to use the Tromix adapter for an AR carbine buffer tube and put a raised comb stock (Magpul CTR with riser) on it, and while it's an OK solution - it's kinda heavy and kludgy.

Looks like the Krebs safety is probably worth it. I bought some mags with the BHO which would be okay for the range for a cease fire, but I like the idea of the safety holding the bolt open while you swap out mags.

If you get yourself a PS AK47 G3, you will be very happy as I do with mine, really impressed me, with overall quality, add some Magpul mags or orange Tapco and lastly another plus made in USA.

I really like the MagPul Zhukov kit ... I put one on my Bulgarian Arsenal SLR-95 ... its a milled receiver so I had to modify the stock a bit but with a little patience I got it to fit right and tight but I wish it didn't have quite the angle to it. Then I put a Texas Weapons Systems top cover on, which unlike other railed top covers the TWS is rock solid ... and on that, I put a H&K Hensoldt 3.5x20 scope that for several years, had been sitting on the shelf like a neglected red-headed stepchild ... on this it works okay. Its better than a red-dot but not as well as more powerful scopes that my aging eyes appreciate.

I was waiting for a PSA G3 Triangle folder to come on the market, but a Romanian Kyber build was for sale local to me, so I got it instead. But at $700, they will be hard to pass up when in stock! Here's my Romak 991 folder. Lets us know how that new PSA runs!!!

I would say get an AK. You already have an AR. If fun is what you have in mind, why get the same thing in another caliber? Get something different and learn a new skill set. The aftermarket for AKs has grown to the point that you can really customize your rifle, or you can leave it just as Mr Kalashnikov designed it. Either way, AKs are fun, cheap to shoot and can be much more accurate than many give them credit for. Plus, they run like a Timex... take a licking and keep on ticking. I'm not a traditionalist, so here's what my Romanian G Code rifle has morphed into:

Well since this thread is already bumped, I might as well ask the question. OP, what did you end up buying? Any pics for the group?

If you haven't bought yet, I'll pile on my opinion: I missed out on the cheap AKs. My brother has one that he bought years ago when you could get them for $200 or so. They were worth it at that price, not 700-1000. I have an SKS that I did get pretty inexpensive. I'll never part with it but I wouldn't have bought it at today's prices either.

I do have several ARs including one in 300blk. ARs are cheap, no matter what caliber you get them in. With current import restrictions, you can buy 2 ARs for the price of one AK.

He bought the PSA AK

I have all 3. Romanian AK47, AR in 7.62x39 and an SBR in .300 Blackout. Hardly ever shoot the AK and reload for both the .300 and 7.62x39. I’m currently using Reloader 7 under 123 gr FMJ and a LGS has a lot of 7.62x39 brass for real cheap. The Blackout has a 10” barrel and AAC Cyclone suppressor and I only shoot subs through it.

I personally say AK, as that’s my preferred platform in rifles. Get a WASR and try to avoid American made AKs. They tend to be trash and fall apart.

The psa gen3 is a good AK. However I'll keep my polish east German and Yugo AKs just in case....

I've all three, and unless you really like reloading, get the 7.62x39 AR. The cheap Wolf/Tula ammo is a solid 2 MOA in a decent AR.

The best of both worlds is, IMHO, the CMMG "Mutant" AR15 that takes AK mags, but its the most expensive option and is not very close to being a "standard" AR.
