I saw an AK with a folding stock at the gun show today and it got me thinking. What kind of folding stock is better, side or under? What are the benefits of a folding stock over a fixed? Which one, side or under, returns closest to zero? Which one falls apart more? Which one is better built?

SIDE SIDE SIDE SIDE SIDE.

Sorry, but I've never liked the underfolding AK stocks at all, ever. The Romanian wire folders that I've seen are easy to work with and very sturdy.

There is a reason the Russians don't use wire side folders.

I don't like underfolders at all, and wire side folders rank only slightly higher in my book.

Aesthetically, I prefer the under folder, but once you shoot both the side folders are superior for most folks, but the standard stock is significantly better than either.

standard stock on the ak and the FAL don't allow me a good check weld, I can't see through the sights with my cheek on the stock. I have to have a folder to see through the sights. I prefer underfolder for the wicked looks and low profile, but the side folder isn't bad.

I like the underfolder for historical value, but other than that I prefer a side folder.

I prefer side folders with just about any kind of weapon with folding stocks.

It really just comes down to personal preference. The fixed stock is naturaly going to be sturdier and allow for a better cheek weld. I like underfolders, it may just take alittle getting used to. They are all built to take and have taken extreme abuse all over the world. If you get an opportunity try shouldering one of each and just pick whatever feels best to you.... or you could just get one of each:evil:

East Germans started that feature, if I remember right, though it caught on with the Poles as well as the Romanians.

I'd agree that the Russian full-stock folders are the best out there, followed by the Russian triangle/skeleton folders. I'd take a side folding wire stock over an underfolder, though, personally. The wire side folder is workable enough, though they'd be better if the builders had matched the standard AK length of pull.

ACE sidefolder for me. Requires no mods to the wall of the receiver, solid as a rock, and gives a decent (for a folder) cheekweld.

As long as it folds to the left side, or at least clears the bolt handle.

My CRAPCO folding stock won't let me fire the rifle with the stock folded. Handle hits the rifle butt... hard.

I guess a belt sander would fix the situation. About a 1/2" off the top.
